Which is most shite? You decide.

Will it be the 'skeleton wanking in a biscuit tin'-powered anglo-french affair, or the seemingly pointless j-tat with the comical handling??

Please illustrate your point with pictures, real-world experierences and half-truths you heard in the pub.

If we're talking pub bore stats the Solara wins all day long. French cars are automatically rubbish, as are British cars- the Solara scores on both counts. The Solara has Avenger ancestry for even more points.

The Stanza is Japanese and therefore 100% reliable.

I've gone for the Solara because although I rarely see either these days, the Solara just has the look & feel of a slightly crap car (in an affectionate way). Besides, if the Stanza didn't have those annoying vertical red sections in the rear light clusters, it would have Renault 14 rear lights & would therefore win hands down!

I vote for the Talbot. Whilst turning up in a Stanza will just get you a look of pity “couldn’t you afford a new car?â€Â, arriving in a Solara will get you looked upon as very weird at least, and possibly dangerous.

I think the bigger engined Solara would also have more performance? In sixth form college a mate had one and he could certainly do the longest wheelspins, which is more meaningful as time to lap the Nurburgring. It was a shite car even 20 years ago 8)

Has to be the Solara, though it's not an easy call. It's the shite-heap I'd most want to own.

The Solara is more shite. The Stanza is a hatchback and therefore has an element of useful practicality to it.

Posted

The Solara has all the elements of shite in a perfect balance. Stanza is reliable and practical, and probably quite fuel efficient.

It's got to be the Solara, hasn’t it?! Not particularly any good when new means there are so few survivors today. I always liked the rear end on the Solara too.

Then again, it's been some time since I saw a Stanza in the metal...

Solara every time!

Heres why -

This is not a car that anyone spent a lot of time designing is it?

But the interior does have certain something

And anyway, in a Solara you can park in the sea and get grrlz

I vated Solara too.

All the shiteness and style of the Alpine but without the practical hatchback. Good Work. :D

The Solara.

If I saw a Solara in the street I would stop and gape at it

If I saw a Stanza I would inwardly note that I had just passed a Stanza and just guess from the reg number as to whether it were a Datsun or a Nissan

Posted

Tough call, this. Out of the two the Stanza wins on pure shiteness simply because of the dire ride, handling and styling.

The Solara is hardly the pinnacle of motoring joy, but I'd be happy to let a top notch 1.5 or 1.6 drip oil on my driveway. They go quite well, ride ok and can corner if needed.

Yeah, gimme a nice two-tone Solara any day. Hirst can have all the Stanzas.

How can you dish the mighty Stanza with it's graceful handing and the high praise it got from the motoring press when new?.

I still voted for the Solara though!

It's 'leading the class' because it's cheaper than the rest! I can't remember the last time I saw one of these.

The Stanza appears to be treading water in this cesspool because of its perceived practicality as a five door hatch.

Can I remind you shiters that it was also available in far less practical four and three door guises?

I vote Stanza.

Stanza is available in crazy JDM spec too, along with badge-engineered Violet and Auster sisters. I wonder if anyone has ever fitted a Bluebird Turbo engine into one?

All this being said, the Solara is definitely more shite.

Voted for Salora. Had a ride in the Alpine version of these. Uncle (Who had some seriously miserable cars) was taking me to Calais. Just outside of Brussles, the subframe snapped in half. This was in 1994.

I'll go with what I know.

Solara.

Reasons:-

- I'm sure it looked dated even when it was released.

- I love the steering wheel

- My friends Dad had an Alpine and it sounded so rough and raw. I enjoyed the ding sound as he changed from 3rd to 4th gear. I am assuming the Solara enjoyed these characteristics too.

Though I need to look into the Stanza more as I am interested to read about how bad its handling was. Does anyone here have absolute 1st hand experience of it? Just how bad was it??

*anorak mode* I believe that the Solara was actually descended from the Simca 1100 */anorak mode* A descent that far in just a few short years automatically makes it the default choice :)

I've got one with 4 mixed-brand budget tyres, 100K on the clock and it's even the earlier sort before they made some changes to the suspension setup. The handling isn't as comical as people hype it up to be. It does have pretty heavy steering and you can get it to squeal the tyres on 90 degree turns without much effort, but to be honest I haven't seen much of this severe understeer or snap oversteer they mention - probably does if you drive it like a tit. On the other hand, the actual ride quality is genuinely superb, it drives over cobbles/rutted tracks as if they were airport runways.

Perhaps I'll tax it up and take it to the Autoshite meet, doubt it though.

I honestly couldn't choose between them, a white-bumper Alpine would be more shite but a Solara and Stanza are on a pretty even footing if you ask me.

I think he means the 1.6 engine

in jap circles the stanza is getting a little following, apart from us does anyone really love the solara

You have to bear in mind that the only people who like the Stanza will also be on here.

Posted

I think the Stanza looked cool when it came out. The Solara never did. I've not driven either. Do I vote Tony or Gordon?

Posted

Solara wins, if not just for being from a pointless brand that has long since disappeared. Want!

Posted

I voted Solara for all the reasons above, but especially the bloody racket they made.

Proof of the existence of a 3 door....sorry....

It got raced and obliterated.....

However, I would like a two-tone Alpine/Solara; it would have to be done, if I had ££ to wipe my arse with, and somewhere to keep it.

Like Jay Kay for example, wouldn't it be great if he flogged all his good stuff and replaced it with shite?!
