Drum brakes,WTF?

MrsDs Korando has disc brakes all round ,but handbrake works on drums inside the rear discs.Seems to need adjusting occasionally, when she complains about the lever coming up too far.The adjusters are only accessible from inside the drum,so the disc has to come off, along with the caliper, pads and carrier.Thought I'd treat it to some new shoes,as the original ones were well worn last time I looked a while back.Hadn't done anything with brake shoes for many a year and was reintroduced to a world of dust, awkward clips and low flying springs. However the drums have quite a lip to get over the new shoes and with them having to be adjusted first, the lever now seems to come up further than before, with the shoes having to bed in.Going to get some new discs, which is probably what I should have done anyway.Seems odd how it's worn so much,as really the brake is only used with the car stationary.

Has it not got a little cutout on the backplate or front off the drum with a rubber blank in it ? Usually pop out the blank and it gives access to the adjuster wheel so you can back the shoes off to remove the drum or adjust them up without removing the drum

Im sure when I did one of these, you just stick a screwdriver through a wheel bolt hole on the drum to adjust the star wheel on the top, same as most other drum/disc setups?

Some types have a grommet on the backplate, some have one between the wheel studs on the wheel side and some dont have any!

I've not had the joy of working on a Korando so I dont know.

What I would say is, if you file the edge off the friction material (at 45 degrees or so) and wind the adjustment off the brake cables 1st you can usually adjust the shoes up a few more clicks.

Roadtest it then adjust up the cable to suit. Job done!

Yes they should only be applied when the vehicle is at rest, I had to get out of the habit of applying it just as it came to a stop. The driver may need re-focussing, good luck with that.

Grind off the lip and you'll find the discs slides over the shoes no problem.

Got it sorted!Let MrsD drive round for a week to bed everything in.Wheel off, disc screw removed.Turn disc on hub through 36 degrees so clearance hole for wheel bolt lines up with big hole in hub, giving access to adjuster with a small screwdriver.Tweak up a few notches, until shoes  just touch drum.Back off slightly, job done.MrsD says it's 300% better.Mot on Monday afternoon so here's hoping. The old shoes have lasted 100k miles, and not much fat on them anyway,so perhaps shouldn't grumble.IMG_20260124_153313.jpg.61830a37f67a1e3919322646d5c01c4f.jpg
