1998 Passat Sport tfi 110Brake. When cold all is well but once warm it pulls very slowly and no turbp notived. Not smoking or blowing oil or burning oil or water and doesn't run rough. It just lacks power! I thought a turbo hose may be collapsing when hot but nothing visible. Lankytim thinks fuel filter any other possibilities please? Thanks in advancr.

Does it rev to the redline?

I'd have thought a fuel filter issue would be worse when the engine is cold, especially as VW filters recirculate the fuel return to warm up the filter. Could be a fuel leak or air entering the fuel somewhere.

Cheers gents. I don't think it is revving to the red line now you mention it. I think bout 5000 revs at most as it goes. Sods fucking law I'm170 miles from home. Ah well have rac card if needed.

Might be the turbo gone as I have similar happen to an old Octavia TDI I had.

Total lack of power and no willigness to rev at all.

Seems this is quite a common thing with VW turbo engines.

Where abouts are you, i know a good vag mechanic in the Notts area pm me if you want his number he is good. 5k rpm is redline surely? Have you tried unplugging the maf sensor? Could be a boost leak, dead turbo, jammed vnt on turbo, dead maf. A check for fault codes would be useful a lot of vag forums have lists of members willing to do scans for beer tokens.

Sounds like a dead turbo to me. I drove a Skoda Superb like that a couple of weeks ago. It'd still cruise at 70+, but took forever to get there.

Thanks once again. I'm currently holed up deep behind enemy caravans in Skegness. Turbo works when cold but seems to pack up when cold. It might not reach 5k revs but will tey again later and see. Excuse crap spelling and punctuation please as I'm on my Blackberry and my eyesight is crap!

couple of litres of four star and a match....

Take the pipe off the middle of the turbo and see if the impeller hasn't seized/free to rotate.

Did about six miles in it today and it revved right through the range to red line very cleanly. Problem onlly seems to occur when hot.

If it's flat all the time, the airflow sensor is very likely to be the culprit. You could try disconnecting it and seeing if that improves the situation. A new one from VW is around £70 exchange and is really easy to fit. I usually prove this by logging actual and specified values in VCDS (VAG Com).

If it resets itsself when you turn the ignition off and then on, it's likely to have logged an overboost code and the ECU shuts the turbo down to prevent damage. This will likely be due to sticking variable vanes (VNT mechanism) in the manifold. There are guides on the internet on how to clean these.

Cheers lads. Possibly best to hook it up to an fcr when I get home do you think? Its liveable with on motorways etc but is a right pain pn single carriage roads as overtaking is pretty much out of the question.

might be worth trying a new turbo control solenoid

they are cheap and easy to change and if they sieze up the ECU can't control the turbo anymore

Thanks. Just to confuse things a bit we did 100 miles in it today in two 50Mile bursts and it was fine.

It's Skegness.... it makes everything seem lifeless and dull...
