Breakfast (I’m a little bit obsessed with iced coffee since my recent holiday 🤷‍♂️)

So what’s gone on here then? Why the change of heart with the Vel Satis?

TBH it’s a bit of a “never meet your heroes” moment for me. I’ve always wanted a 3.5 V6 Vel Satis.

The one I had wasn’t a particularly bad example yet it was absolutely riddled with faults. I wanted something that could do barge-like things with little fuss and what I bought was a massive project with no time to do any of the work it needed.  Not actually properly broken in any particular way, just full of small issues that all add up.

A diesel manual convertible isn’t quite what I had in mind to replace it but, well, it is summer.

Drives lovely. Exactly as described, @WillCarter is a proper gent.

Brilliant, sorry you caught me at a manic moment, I would have loved to have chatted for longer. Glad you love the car too, it's a really lovely thing that with minimal work could be an absolute minter.

Had a chance to look around the Vel Satis once things died down this afternoon and despite the lady in the dashboard telling me all the things that are wrong with it, I was genuinely quite impressed. Luckily, I've got far too much on my plate right now so it's already made its way to eBay.

Photogenic old bus though.

So… a diesel VAG product that has 142k miles up it and has an EML on… scanning for fault codes is going to be fun, right

All of these cleared fine apart from P201500 - so that will likely be our cause.  Looks like the swirl flap motor, rather than on the exhaust side as expected.

Looks like the stop in the motor breaks causing it to be able to go out of range, and a £6 repair bracket exists to fix it!

I’ll be keeping a close eye on the glow plugs though - losing a glow plug normally prevents the DPF regen from running, so it’s pretty important to fix.

It’s a basically brand new diesel Audi, I don’t think it’s main board worthy 🙈 but okay

Just ordered some service parts as well as the thing to bolt onto the swirl flap motor. Cleared the “service due” warning when I was messing around with the diagnostics so I gusss I’d better actually service it!

What do we reckon to this seat? The leather is in decent enough condition, it just has a load of this light coloured cracking all over the side bolster. Doesn’t feel worn out or damaged.

Do the various dyes etc available on eBay work? IMG_2231.jpeg.26a91d6dfe6590abb9aa1ed2d515c97d.jpeg

Faded laser printed plate from TRIANGULAR AUTO’S AND AUDIO be gone!

temptation to print it on a green badge blank was strong

Looks nice that. A lot of folks berate a diesel convertible and while I do understand it to a degree, unless you're at a standstill, with the roof down and the radio off, you don't hear the engine anyway. We have Golf cab with a similar motor and it's great.

Does that last photo mean you are doing plates again? 🤐

I bought one of these dabber things for my Merc's driver's seat which was similar and it did a great job: https://thescratchdoctor.co.uk/product/leather-repair-pen-10ml/

Really quick and easy to use too

Not yet - I found a single white blank in my stash. Can’t even change the rear plate (unless I print a green one) because I’ve none!

Oil change time. Can’t believe it doesn’t have a dipstick but still has a dipstick tube with a plastic cap on it 🤷‍♂️

4.5l of oil out, 4.5l of oil in.

Changed the air filter and pollen filter too - I don’t think it’s massively overdue a service but also definitely due.

Swirl flap motor is a bigger bastard of a job than anticipated - the plastic inlet manifold is different and more of a bastard to do. Ideally needs to be removed from the car.

I’ll need to take a closer look at the manifold but this is quite promising

about 7x the cost of the other commonly available design but it looks like it attaches differently and therefore involves less labour.

Decided if this is going to be in the main board it’s going to need some shite spec repairs

One of the number plate lights isn’t working - took it out to replace the bulb and it’s actually broken so not making contact.

One thing I do like about VAG shit like this is that basic parts shared between models are stupidly available and cheap as a result

IMG_2241.jpeg.e5f9f9ef62f4082d436a84241a0e31c2.jpeg

after filtering through the billion LED ones of course. £9.99 delivered for a new pair with new bulbs and screws.

Have you tried removing the screw? I tried on my 07 cab and they were rusted solid and just rounded off when I tried to remove them.

Yeah it came out fine, they’re not rusty.

This prompted me to have a look at the brakes

pretty odd to have an advisory for just one side, but right enough, the outer pad on the OS is quite a bit thinner (just looked through the wheels rather then doing a proper inspection for now)

I guess it was binding at some point but it does seem fine now.

Oddly the same seems to be the case at the rear - OS pad is thinner than the NS, but they’re significantly newer so it’s not something that’d be flagged on the test presuming they’re not imbalanced.

Guess I’ll need to get it on the ramp and check it out properly, probably chuck both front and rear pads in.
