Let's play..... Name That Fault *applause from studio*

A bit like Name That Tune, except I wish I was as smooth as Tom O'Connor, and it's with old cars.

Can you name that fault in 1, 2 or 3?

1. I was driving along a country road in the Ginetta, fuel gauge well into the reserve so taking it very easy. I had to stop where the road was narrow to let another car past. No funny noises or anything.

Can you Name That Fault in one?

2. The oncoming traffic went past, I snicked it into first, blipped the throttle and let out the clutch.

Can you Name That Fault in two?

3. There was an enormous bang and I trundled forwards at 2mph down the gentle slope, engine still running but no drive.

Can you Name That Fault in three?

4. I pulled to the side of the road, got out and had a look under the back of the car. There was a large hole in the diff casing.

Autoshiters, can you Name That Fault in 4?

All this happened on the bit of road that's too narrow for two cars to pass each other, and I'd pulled in to the only passing place for 200 yards. When the AA man arrived he wasn't quite sure where to stop...

He was a good bloke and towed me home on a bar, 10 miles is quite a long way :?

I managed to source a new axle last night so that's the fun for this weekend.

Hope you enjoyed playing Name That Fault, you've been a lovely audience *showbiz smile*

Clutch release bearing exploded?

Diff carrier (side) bearings collapsed ? Or crown wheel dropped a tooth ?

Piston broke?

Clutch release bearing exploded?

There was a large hole in the diff casing.

It's good, but it's not right...

Or is that from another game show

Whatever the problem is, you can solve it in one easy step.

1. Install Rover K series.

Simples!

Unlikely, but... prop shaft bolts come undone, prop shaft fallen off at the gearbox end... ? ? ?

Dont' forget ....only fully tighten the bolts on the axle once the weight is on it and allow for the angle of the diff flange of it will drive like shit

Fixed it at last :D

3 weeks of misery on the bus and train, why did it take so long? Well....

The diff was in a bad way and I know enough to not try and rebuild it, second hand crownwheel & pinion is the long road to misery I reckon. A replacement axle then, and I found one in just under a week.

But the brakes were 8" instead of 9" so I had to get the backplates off my axle. Which I failed to do, despite using as many different methods as I could.

I tried bolting the spare wheel on and clouting it. FAIL

I tried, as per the Haynes manual, to wind two bolts in from the back. They just bent. FAIL

I tried a slide hammer. FAIL

Eventually I gave in and thought I'd get some second hand brakes and backplates, this took over a week, and once I'd found a set and they were in the post, I had an idea to get my old ones off: if 2 bolts were bending, use 4, it'll push twice as hard.

I ordered some meaty M10 bolts and wound them in, a bit at a time as if I was torquing a cylinder head. Strain on the socket, 1/8th of a turn at a time and......

BANG

it came loose, as did my bowels.

Then it was simply a matter of getting it all together, which by the time I got the propshaft aligned wrong and had to drop the axle again took all of yesterday and most of this morning.

Filled and bled the brakes, filled the diff and it works, woo hoo :D

Now to attend to all the other things that need doing whilst I consider selling it :?
