Did they find the leak? Mine is holed in the condenser, looks like a stone must have got flicked through the lower grille - you can see where the oil has pissed out when you look through the slats.

Nah they weren’t interested in locating the leak, just said it’d need further investigation. If it is the condenser I might change it.

I actually quite enjoyed the job. But that might say more about my mentality to automotive pain than how fun it should be.

Speaking of tyres - 172 tyre recommendations anyone? I’m told Uniroyals are alright.

(If anyone wants to buy some part worns get at me and I’ll stop the tyre place binning them)

Don't get Toyos Proxies. They're shit on this - from mine and other experiences. Had them on other cars and they've been great (like on my Z4). But for some reason they are crap on the Clio and regarded that by others too.

Really if you want the best driving experience then ... Michelin Pilot Sports 🙃

I hear the Goodyear equivalent are quite good. No idea what sizes are available now in the Clio.

Just remember these do snap oversteer hard if driven hard and provoked by letting off the accelerator in a corner. Not a fun experience if you're not prepared. I don't think this age will have traction control to save your arse if it happens.

I had Toyo Proxes on my last Saab and they were rubbish.  Reasonable lateral grip but bugger all traction, and they wore out at a rate of knots.

On the basis of Kiltox's recent tyre purchasing history I am assuming this will be getting a full set of Luckyland Happy Gallops.

My Clio RSi had some Spyders on the back. Kwik Fit budget brand from the late 2000s... In 2023.

They were shiny, and still had loads of tread, but it would go sideways on wet roundabouts at about 20mph.

They got replaced rather sharpish.

I’m keen not to do my usual and put the worst ditchfinders achievable on it, but I’m also not spending £500 on tyres for a £500 car.

Tempted to match the one summer tyre it has and buy three more.

I run Uniroyal Rainsports on the Kangoo and they're decent. Not the ultimate in dry grip but very good in the wet and I live in Scotland. Plus I've essentially got a Clio with a fiveheed so having the tyres limit the hoonage before it falls over isn't a bad thing IMO.

You will be able to fit 15" wheels on there and 195/50 15s if that's not what you have already.

£500 car.

You can't get a running, MOT Clio 1*2 for under £1k, let alone 500 quid. This realistically is an easy £1.5k to £2k car minimum now.

But it's also what you want to do with it. If caning it hard around corners then decent tyres will make a noticeable difference. Running to the shops with the occasional traffic light GP, then less so.

I can't remember the exact model but Nankang have a sport tyre that is well regarded and (used to be at least) good value.

I use Kumho Ecsta HS52s on my MX5 and I've had no complaints so far. Looking at ATS, they'd be £300 fully fitted in your Clio's size. D rated for economy, A rated for wet grip.

I know some people on here have had issues regarding longevity with Kumhos, but that hasn't been my personal experience. But, as ever, your mileage may vary. Literally, in this case.

Nankang NS2/NS20?

https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/nankang/ns-20/195-45-r16-84v-1554314

About £60 a corner. F fuel economy rating is quite reassuring as it means they should be grippy, C wet grip rating less so.

A quick google says you can get PS3s for about £100-110 a corner. So nearly double.

I remember now. NS2 aren't great but NS2R is the one with all the raving. At least a few years ago anyway.

NS2Rs are like £120 in that size so not a saving vs Michelins but probably higher performance as they are a trackday semi-slick.

Ah yeah that makes sense. They used to be raved as cheap and excellent performance. But I guess they've caught on to this and priced them accordingly to the competition.

The 16 inch wheels definitely have quite a bit of a premium and much poorer choice over the 15 inch wheels in these sizes. Problem is, a second hand set of alloys in 15 inch is still far more than the tyre price difference.

Looking through the choices available, I'd probably go for the Rainsports on this if I didn't want to fork out for PS3/etc.

Blackcircle usually have it on offer, just they're reducing other tyre brands today.

I’ve seen those kits that are similar with roof lining coloured caps on if that’s what you’ve gone for? It’ll look like a chesterfield sofa!

Yeah that’s the one. It’ll do for now, I’ll put a new one in at some point I guess.

It’s definitely a car worth saving, I’ve always thought these will head the same way as stuff like Saxo VTR’s etc.

I've got Rainsports on the front of the Merc, I've been pretty impressed to be honest.  Tried to make it understeer on wet roundabouts but to no avail.
