Thread of several Saabs: Vacuum Pump Seals

Took a look at the fan wiring, very short route and simple. All looks fine except I cant inspect a part of it that sits on top of the chassis leg as there's no room to see underneath the loom there. Can't think why that bit would move anyway. Fan loom uses the rear ground, all looks spotless.

Fuses were conFUSe-ing.

WIS says:

Either 35 or 36. I thought one might be for a model with 2 fans but no. Mine definitely has a vacuum pump  though, all B207s do, so I'm unclear what fuse 36 is all about?

Both descriptions mention 2 fan relays, I presume that's for the 2 speeds.

Anyway, mine only has a 35 and its not blown.

Bit too high an amperage but looks original.

🤷‍♂️

I was tired of the tatty gear gaiter on the 93 so changed it out. Of course, it came out perfectly easily and wasn't* made almost entirely of aluminium.

After an initial inability to get gears because I put something back the wrong way around we were all good to go.

I found a reset procedure for the roof on Tech 2 which involved opening it manually but leaving the deck lid fully open. I then used Tech 2 to close it again and hey presto Ive only bloody got a working roof now!! I actually think I could have closed the roof just with the button but its fixed, for free!

I'm surprised after owning so many Saab's (and Vauxhall's) you've never invested in a Tech2.

I'll say this again now you've used it a few times very usefully and successfully 😂

It's why I haven't sold mine. While I don't have anything GM of that era, it's still useful on the odd occasion like getting an Astra door unlocked that had it's loom broken.

I need to read up/find a video on how to add and remove stuff after gaining security access as it needs a new CIM.

In the past few days I noticed a strange puddle on the drive. Initially the L322 was parked over it but the area of the car above the spot was completely dry, just ahead of the OSR wheel.  Previously the Saab had  been parked there and I noticed a similar spot again, in front of its OSR wheel. It was mildly green tinged and smelled of hydraulic oil. I had been running the roof several times after getting it working. Opened the deck lid and sure enough, cylinder pissing out oil:

It runs to the right, down the arch tub and through a drain hole in the inner rear wing and out just in front of the wheel.

Used cylinder about £80-90, great*

Can they be disassembled and rebuilt? If so probably just an o-ring or something that is knackered.

Not sure actually but that is a shout. Thankfully removal of the cylinder looks straightforward and I can bosh the car in my garage while I rebuild.

New cylinder and CIM ordered.

Once Ive recoloured and waterproofed the roof and given it a polish I might put it up for sale. Not so much because I want rid but just because I bought it as a project, its proved its a good car and I feel I want to see the challenge through. Nothings selling on here so I'd have to brave The Public but it's exactly the right time of year for a convertible.

If it works out I might try another fixer-upper.

Got a new roof ram from Ron Saab Leeds (go to guy as well as Bill at Saabits) and set about replacing.

Old one was a doddle to take off:

2 lines, a sensor and 2 clips.

Boot was awash with CHF!

Level was expectedly low:20260307_150806.jpg.19e6261a22e9b30297efbbc0de2e13f3.jpg

Topped up using an adapted funnel and some hose.20260307_150824.jpg.5fae58bcf222c17ce5e53ad97bc4f00f.jpg

Test and OK, hopefully no more leaks for now!

Bonus rust proofing of the boot floor too!

I wanted to Noobtune the current 9-3 however Karl that does them is on holiday just now.

One thing that these remaps do is blow the already brittle vacuum pump seals so I replaced these tonight. I think this is the 3rd one of these I've done.

Lived here on the end of the camshaft:

These bits off.

The box on the left is the deionisation module, basically one half of what the old DI cassette did.

Off, its been leaking for a few years:

Now here, in 2 halves.

20260506_190755.jpg.1931bc6ff18450d2833028a6ae3c4180.jpg

Both seals, the one between the pump and head and the internal seal were brick hard.

New Philips screws were supplied to hold the pump together but they were the wrong pitch. The originals were fine so they were reused.

All back together.

I plan to send off the ECU next week for mapping.
