Cambelt roulette, or that nearly went badly wrong

Right, I've been playing this game with the range rover of too many wheels.

200 TDI, god knows how many miles, but around a year overdue.

Recently it's been a bit reluctant to start, and smokes like a chimney when it does, fine when it's warmed up tho.

I've had the bits to sort it for at least six months. Today is the first opportunity I've had to get into it. Bear in mind this has towed everything for miles recently, including two other RRC 's

This is what I found

Cambelt roulette, just say no kids!IMG_20250205_103246.thumb.jpg.2149bd27f46cb624b71c9218053d08c9.jpg

I'd use heavy duty thread if you are to sew those teeth back on...

Can't quite see what's happened here, maybe the pics are in the wrong order.

Has the crank pulley mashed the key? The belt looks intact and hasn't lost any teeth.

Confused...

Common problem on 200tdi, the woodruff keys aren't machined far enough into the centre of the pulley and crank gear.

This allows them to chatter, regardless of how tight the crank bolt is.

Leads to the damage shown.

Crank isn't great, fortunately damage is mainly to the pulley damper, and with a new crank gear, a couple of woodruff keys and some artful bodging it'll live to see another day.

Anyone know someone who would weld up and remachine a crank nose? I've got a spare crank, but it's in similar condition.

That way I could get the slots cut in the correct place

Variable cam timing on the cheap. Win win.
