That looks brilliant.

Glad it provided a good night's sleep.

That's terrific!

Would you build one of these for a customer? A bit longer but similar idea...

I'm really enjoying building this, but I don't think it's financially viable for me to build these for anyone else.  I'm nowhere near fast enough at this sort of work to justify the hourly rate I'd have to charge to make it worthwhile stepping away from what I'm actually good at.

Might be worth speaking to Motorcraft in Doncaster who specialise in building overland bodies which are similar to this

Understood!

I could do one of these myself, especially following your process, it's just a time issue - and I need to build the flatbed first. I've seen some of the prices Motorcraft charge!

Not including time - what do you reckon that has cost to put together in parts, welding etc.?

Daren't add it up really... The extrusion and cast corners for the frame alone were about £1300, insulated side and wall panels would be £280+ vat a piece. Hope my wife isn't reading this!

As with any project it's the dozens of £30s and £40s that really get you!

That's a useful steer on the big ticket items anyway, thank you!

Definitely something to consider for the Laplander in time.

Not yet as it currently looks like this, and I'm about to move house.

But then again @cobblers, if you were to buy an off-the-shelf camper, you'd pay a lot more, and then probably more on top of that to get it into a unit you wanted.

At least this way you can space the building costs out a bit.

Very impressive, I'd like to do something similar with one of my landies one day, but it'll probably never happen 😕

That's bloody cool! A lot of money could be saved by just using a traditional rounded 90 degree luton extrustion for the frame (Mine has the 45 degree chamfer on that I was quite picky about having) or even just plan 3" aluminium angle.  Same goes for the panels, really. I used these because we were ordering them for replacing the cladding on the front facia at work and I managed to use the offcuts for this. Otherwise I'd probably have just made my own panels up with 4mm GRP on the outside, 20mm kingspan and 4mm ply in the inside.

Yeah, in the scheme of things it's not that bad, but just a far cry from my initial idea of "I'll keep it basic and cheap, couple of windows off Aliexpress, cut the GRP sheet sides out of a scrap trailer and paint them up with raptor to hide the scrapes"

You've made something which doesn't look home made which I like!

Before we bought and converted our Crafter I was looking at demountables that would go on a double cab pickup, there's very little out there that's designed to go on a 'proper' flatbed though, save the odd thing like the Bimobil Husky:

Don't really want it so big that I have a bed over cab, partly because I'm planning a silly stack exhaust and snorkel up behind cab because small Volvo truck.

Yeah, I've gotta say that after building this, instead of looking at vans for my next project I'm looking at pickups. A single cab Hilux with the original tub removed and this sort of thing on the back would be quite good. I agree about not really wanting to go too tall, I was thinking of a fold *down* floor on the back overhang to give standing room for a shower etc.

Must get this finished and used before I start thinking those thoughts, though!

That's a combination of me looking about ten years younger than I am, and also being about ten years more grumpy and miserable than I should be for my age

You mentioned your missus, what does she think of it and does she camp in it with you? (um, not camp like that, but camp, I mean 😀)

She genuinely loves the van, and thinks the camper pod is "pretty cool" but was a little bit grumpy about me just building it round a single bed. But truth be told, she knows that I go camping every week to spend some time alone and that's what keeps my head from exploding. When we go away together in a van we take a tent/ awning and one of us ends up kipping in that with a dog or two anyway!

Ditto.

Flabber is ghasted at the result.

Also that pickup is too cool for the word cool .

I've only just noticed that the crewcab T25 only has 2 doors.

Is the T25 the only 2 door crew cab pickup ever made?

There's a third door on the passenger side only. Some had four, I think
