Towing Question

Pretty sure this has been covered on here before, but i cannot find the thread. (And google doesn't give a 100% answer)

Anyway ..

Tomorrow i plan on getting rid of the Mk3 Fiesta.

This will involve me steering the Fiesta, as my dad tows me down in the Audi.

We will be using a rope.. (GR8 4 snapping) .. and taking it to the local weighbridge, which is about 3 minutes away.

If we get pulled by the "Rozzers" what can i be done for ?

No Tax.

No MOT.

Provisional Licence.

No Insurance.

Or is there some sort of law, that says if a vehicle is being towed, it does not need to have the above ?

Thanks

Sorry as far as I remember, it does need the above, as you are steering. That having said, as it's that near, I would go for it myself!

If its not obviously in a dangerous condition then you should be fine, although technically I think you could be done for something. Im not sure what though!

Just make sure it has decent tyres and the brakes work, try not to have any sharp edges. If you do get pulled if you explain its off to the scrapyard they should be ok.

Remove the engine & stash it in the boot - hey presto its no longer a car but a trailer.

Book it in for an MoT somewhere, quoting the reg number, then if stopped, you were just trying to tow start it so you could take it for the MoT test!

Or just wing it. Remember seeing a bloke in a Cavalier Mk1 being towed in Birmingham once. Didn't have any glass or lights and as he went past, he shouted 'shit hot eh?' Ah. Those were the days.

 Okay chancing it , it is !

Father Ted - It has no engine anyway sir (Was removed yesterday)

Lankytim - Would you call a 10" rectangular hole right throught the sill, dangerous ?

Thanks for the speedy replies guys (and girls)

I shall report back tomorrow.

Its only 3 mins away. If you do get pulled just stay polite, say where you have come from, where you are going to and unless the policeman is a complete knob he will just let you get on with it.

I have been towed in some right heaps for over 30 miles, but that was in the old days when i cared less. Would be more wary of it now.

I only asked due to the amount of Police flying around at the moment.

(No thanks to the spate of car thefts)

Thanks again

In the eyes of Merseyside Police there is no difference as to whether you were driving the Fiesta or your dads Audi! Be careful!!!! Points and a long ban if you're not lucky.

Can't you ring Neptune and get them to take it away?

Posted

They have started charging i believe.

Might ask someone with atleast a licence to help :)

Plenty of places advertise that they will take scrap cars away free.

If you get an arsey copper stopping you then you will NEVER get insurance until your 25. Think about it!

I got £50 for my Astra and that was collected by a scrap dealer 40 miles away. Phone around.

Don't risk it, not worth the agro for a scrap car. There must be stacks of places not far from you who'd give you cash and collect.

Try A1 Tyres/scrapyard, Oil Sites Rd, Ellesmere Port. I'm pretty sure they come your way to collect scrappers.

Yep !

I can't remember who did it, but i remember them telling me they had to pay.

"Towing charges" then something to do with disposing of tyres cleanly and so on, all in all it came to £50-ish

Follow the bloke and have the tyres back!

Can you not get a Log Book Loan on it for £250 and then leave the rest to them?

Posted

Please tell me you've removed the RS kit off it !

If you can find / beg / borrow / liberate an A-frame for a couple of hours, I have something that'll drag it legally..

Slightly OT but I assume you have done that little bit of welding on the Rebel and you want us to all come around this weekend and put the body back on?

Posted

 Bleeding hell Warren , how quick do you think i work ?

Body is staying off for atleast afew months.

Have to repair the chassis, mock-up the Mazda engine, gearbox and diff.

Then do more body prep work / Repair damaged fibreglass (Not much to do now !)

Remove the front bonnet hinges and make brackets for bonnet pins.

eerm ..

Measure the distance from the Bell-housing to the gear stick, then most probably cut the Rebel transmission tunnel.

Run new brake lines (And adapt what i need to .. to make disk brakes fit.

There is more, i'm sure.

Um, you have checked the wheelbase and track measurements?

Cos I think that really would be the wasps earlobes, and I want a go.

I'm on the case mate ;)

I have signed up to an MX5 forum and have been invited to a meet in Bebington on Saturday.

So all measurements shall be done then.

If you are free fancy popping along ? (As you know your shit !! )
