One way to transport a car i guess!

Just stumbled upon this on the Hemming Blog.

These photos from around 1974-75 are of Chevrolet Vega's being transported from the factory hanging nose first hammock style, in large train road trailers.

Imagine seeing new cars being delivered like this now, People would go mad!

Very 'Volkswagen' I thought, although they'd be patting themselves on the back constantly with adverts and documentaries on their awesomeness if they did.

Quite a decent looker those Vegas i think. For a yank anyway.

There's something very Studebaker Avanti about the nose, I think.

Not a bad idea, but I dont see the advantage over two/three tier trains.Yeah I was gonna say thats not a bad looking motor. I think something similar was on one of the GTA games.

the second pic looks like a guy has just driven the car on though.

i saw the guys arm hanging out and assumed they were driven on, unless they are moving stiffs too

I've been trying to see how those doors latch shut. The only evidence of a locking mechanism that I can see is the little sticky-out bits visible next to the wheels in the pic with the wagon, and there seem to be corresponding pockets in the upright parts of the carriage's frame. That doesn't look particularly secure considering each loaded 'door' must weigh about 5 tons and probably rattles around a bit as the train moves - surely that can't be all there was to it? I bet they weren't the easiest things to unlatch, either!
