Vauxhall Frontera

My brothers getting shot of a Frontera, bought it for the winter but never used it, has asked me to ebay it for him but I'm very reluctant to have anything to do with ebay and getting my patience tested by mouthbreathing scum, so if anyone wants it give me a shout. I've no idea how much it's worth, he gave 750 for it, although any winter demand is now gone and it's down to 3 months T&T. Just round the clock mileagewise, I drove it a few months ago and it seemed ok, apart from a mismatch on the front tyres where the scabby old spare is on the OSF, has a recentish flashy stereo the previous owner was to keep but couldn't work out removal, the back half removes to make it into a kind of a pickup, it's 2.0 petrol and has a decent looking towbar so could be a useful tool. Hmm, picture's a bit small  What's the location and how much does he want please? Had a couple of these and they're a right laugh off road.

Hope you have a Vauxhall dealer nearby. I wouldn't give one scrapyard space.

As you can get a 3D printer.......... I assumed you just printed the car of and drive it

My mate had one of these for years that was passed down by his mum, they're ace without paying 8 times the price for a LR.

Posted

My mate put his one in the local Auto Trader.Polish bloke turned up, payed the asking price (£400 - and it was shagged), loaded it onto his lorry and took it back to Poland for off roading.

What's the feeling on Sport vs normal LWB 5 door?

Posted

Sport only has (belted) seating for four plus removeable rear panels to make it almost a convertable. The older (like this one) Sports had 8V engines from a Carlton I believe.

LWB seem to suffer more problems for whatever reason, though God knows why, and are heavier on fuel.

I quite like the shape off these and have always wondered if a 3.1 trooper engine could be shoehorned in

looks quite tidy for its age.

Sorry about the lifesize pic, was having a late night insomniac moment, will answer PM's now, I reckon 500 cash would take the thing, below is a pic I knocked up for my bruvs facebook page when he bought the thing, although it appears they're handy off road, who woulda thought?

Didn't know the roof came off to that extent or have you 'shopped it? These (Fronteras) can be lifted by a couple of inches quite easily by the way.Out of my meagre budget range alas.

IIRC, all the SWB Sport Funtractors have lift-off rear lids like that. Unfortunately disturbing them usually makes them leak like a colander for evermore. My mate's had three of 'em, the 2.0 Sport has the venerable old C20NE 8-valver a la Carlton, Cavalier etc etc. 115bhp and will just go forever. The LWB had a 2.4 litre version of the old CIH Opel lump found in various Mk1 Carltons/Mantas/Bedford CF2's. Nowhere near as long-lived as the smaller engine, although the LWB one my mate had got us out of Rheola Forest with a hole in the side of the block and just three out of four pistons while we were marshalling on Wales Rally GB a couple of years ago (albeit extremely noisily/smokily......)Even the LWB models are surprisingly capable off road.

Had the roof and rear windows out of mine but not the actual roof frame bit if that makes sense? The last time I went off-roading in it some wags with a well kitted out Disco bought a LWB Fronterror to kill on the course. They managed to break the Disco instead and said they couldn't kill the Frontender! That paled into insignificance compared the bloke who turned up in a newish Freelander who didn't listen to what the on-site instructor said and completely destroyed his car about 20 mins after arriving. The site of him in his car up to his knees in water then watching his fags, fag papers, tobacco and other assorted contents of interior floating away down a stream as he opened his door is one I won't forget in a while.Back o/t sorry I thought the Carlton engines were different to Cavalier ones?

I'll have to aks my bruv, blud, just planning the next projektz, looking for a mint Mk 1 Mondeo so we can swap out the rear box for a grain silo, slam and band yo, streeeeetch some moped tyres onto those badass rimz and crack the bumpers with a hammer. If you can go to 10K I'll chuck in a big curtain ring to hang off the bumper, that'll stick it to the man.

Well, the Fronterror made it back to sunny Bewdley (after I pumped the tyres up...) and was treated to a wash this morning. Turns out it's black, not treesap green :-)

Big thumbs up to Des and his bro, signed, sealed and self-delivered a proper Ronseal motor.

Was a bit tempted by that Saab seemingly abandoned though....:-)

Top buy! I'll see if my mate kept any bits from when he owned his (he's gone to the dark side and bought a Disc***ry now), am only in Bromsgrove.

My brother got lumbered with a new LWB 2.4? petrol Frontevil back in the early '90s. He'd ordered a black Calibra 16v with leather and a/c and the fleet manager (who wanted a LWB Frontera in black, strangely enough) had 'upgraded' him to the Frontera.

Bro' drove the Frontevil about 100 miles, returned it to Vauxhall "It's shit" then sacked the fleet manager. He got his Calibra and rather liked it.

I drove that Frontera briefly. It was one of the few vehicles I've ever driven with zero redeeming features other than it sort of looked ok. Thing is, I wanted to like it but just couldn't. It had a shite ride, no power, no handling and a shite interior. How anyone could consider one of those to be anything other than dire is beyond me.

It's in the top 5 least enjoyable cars I've ever driven.

They've made a lot of shite, but Vauxhall have also made some cars I've really liked. The injected Mk2 Cavs went indecently well for what they were, I loved my old Carlton GSi 24v and I've got a soft spot for 3.0 Senators. My mums trusty old Nova 1.2 Merit saloon got me out of the shit a few billion times as well.

Thing is, when they make a bad car, they really do make some stinkers. Vectras and Fronteras are particularly awful.

There's a Frontera Sport for sale near me for £550. Has test and seems in quite good condition apart from a dent in the offiside front wing. I cant see the front very well from where it's parked though so cant tell if there's other damage..

I quite like the quicker Vectras, my SRI was quite nice for what it cost, and I seemed to get one of the few that was screwed together properly. Perfecty nice motoring with a bit of poke for £1200 (it was a 1999 car in 2007). I even think they look nice, saloons and estates better than the 'atch though.

They seem to do 'everyday sporty' quite well. Astra GTE, Carlton GSI3000, Cav GSI2000, Lotus Carlton if you want to stretch 'everyday' somewhat. Even the SRI badged stuff is usually quick enough, with enough sporty bolt-ons to satisfy. It's when you get something with an LS badge, or Envoy, or whatever name they give it these days to disguise the fact you're a stingy bleeder, that they fail.

Good to hear the Fun-terror is well received, from reading the posts here it seems a bit of a marmite, perhaps we should acknowledge the points made about their off road ability, and that quality of ride and manners on the tarmac will be proportional to their desirability to hairdressers.
