F*ck me it's Early Collection Thread

Taxi to train station is booked, alarm set to 3:45am. This will be the earliest I had to get up to collect anything in a long time and will basically take the entire day as a bit* of a detour is planned for the journey back.

I'm sure it will be worth it though as this will be another first for me, never owned a car from this make nor country of origin! It's color is also criminally underrepresented in the fleet right now. Apparently it was special enough to be featured in a magazine as well.

More in the middle of the night in about 8 hours...

Snacks. It’s all about the snacks.

I considered showing my carefully prepared lunchbox but I'll keep the foodporn to me until it's time for breakfast.

With that being said, goodnight!

Just a handful of people here, I'd be surprised if that changes much.

Wasted lad with the new iPhone was desperate for a charger so playing the life saver there.

He then continued to complain about my sparkling water and is now playing music on speaker 😂

15mins of ranting later and he got out at Darlington. Might get some peace and quiet for a moment.

Or not. Someone's phone alarm has been going off for minutes with nobody at the seat. Someone might miss their stop there...

First leg achieved. Somehow the train was early and I got over 20mins to spend before the next one. Which is currently also on time. Imagine that.

Go to platform 9 and see if you can find the ancient Phonepoint signal access sign, for a service last in use 33 years ago!

Was there in March, when I made a brief visit 'home'

And on the car subject: is it Korean?

Ha, waiting to board right next to it!

And no, although some of Koreas more recent offerings are very tempting. Not in shite territory yet though!

Out towards Manchester Airport, then? International collection?!

I'm struggling to think of a nation you haven't owned that make cars you'd be interested in. Other than Australia?

No flights today but an onward journey from Piccadilly. And no, nothing from Australia unfortunately, they certainly got a few cars I wouldn't mind having a go in! Who wouldn't like a V8 Statesman or Falcon!

On the next train, I have to admit aside from Darlington bro things are pretty uneventful so far. Probably helps its so early that nobody could be bothered to fuck around with the train schedules yet.

Maybe it's time to drop a few more hints:  While it's a little grim and grey up north today our destination is promising up to 17 degrees and sunshine. The detour mentioned in the first post might be related to a rather large brand new event happening today, maybe or maybe not appropriately named for today's acquisition!

My Commodore is likely too early for you (1979) and only one up from base spec, so certainly not awash with toys.

But it does have a Holden 308 motor!

20231215_114038.jpg.ee40b01ff13b1ee4e575ba281edc4a49.jpg

Got it back just before Christmas, after resolving its years sat in my garage as a 'project' by throwing money at someone else to fix it. Bit of a cop out, but nice to have it done.

Really should do a much overdue fleet update.

That's awesome, I'm regularly surprised how much Australian metal unofficially made it's way over here. Just a shame you gotta keep them away from the wet British weather to avoid them just crumbling away but then again that applies to pretty much any UK Ford or Vauxhall.

I was meant to say V8 Statesman (for all the extra toys), I just love the fact that you could get an ordinary family car with such a large powerplant. It'll never happen but I wouldn't mind having an LS in my Senator!

Arriving in Leeds now, about another hour to go before the next change. Unsurprisingly the poo count remains at zero.

Fear not about British weather - it lives with me in New Zealand! I emigrated from the UK in 2010; York was my home town. Ideal for moving away from, as you can return years later and everything still looks the same!

Well assume that will be Shed fest, but no idea re car. Watching with interest as you normally pick up some beauties.

Didn't notice the plate, NZ must still be full of interesting shite from both Australia and Japan. Wouldn't mind doing a junkyard crawl in the hopes of finding the odd rare part for my Corona! And yeah, with York only being an hour by train away from Newcastle I should probably visit more often. It's a beautiful city worth a visit all day long, and no, it certainly won't change all that much anytime soon ha. Just look at all the things to see!

It is Shedfest indeed! Tickets booked long before the car was even up for sale, too so the question of what to bring had been answered when I saw the location!

Not sure if you could call it a shed, most of them are by now but both photos and MOT history indicate the opposite! Its fairly low owner count, initial life in London and a project thread on Retrorides from a few years back (where it received some pretty extensive attention) might explain it.

My stomping ground growing up was close to the Knavesmire. The only thing that's changed is that the woods there are now overgrown with weeds - or I was just oblivious to them in my youth!

I'll admit to having kept an eye out for a Corona such as yours, but they're seriously thin on the ground now, unlike the general number of 80's & 90's cars roaming NZ in 2010. I'm happy to pick up any hard to find bits if they do come up for sale here though - feel free to send a list!

See https://www.pickapart.co.nz/ for a stock list of scrapped cars with bits available. Their prices are largely reasonable and they show photos of the vehicles in question, along with lists of parts already sold!

The only yards I never go near are the Wellington and Christchurch, but @Parky isn't a million miles from the latter.

Ha, you won't have to ask me twice, I'll send you a list via pm should you ever encounter a Corona EXiV or Carina ED! They've always been very niche, even in Japan. The next generation Carina ED gained some popularity again in the 90s but browsing through their inventory I can't even find one of those. Oddly enough many ended up in Russia and are getting broken there, not of much use to anyone outside of Russia now though. Ukraine is another place you can find parts in, I actually bought a pristine set of taillights there. Kinda gives you an idea how much I appreciate any help finding the last remaining bits!

Arriving in Manchester now. Always impressed by the sheer amount of construction going on here. Makes you wonder what makes the place that much more attractive to invest in when Newcastle sees very little in comparison.

The think I like about Manchester is it's the only City I have visited where you need to look down to see something interesting, such as a canal or lost river.

Looking forward to finding out what car it is!

Some online parts perusing, should you need to kill further time on public transport!

I've never spent more than a few hours rushing through Manchester on the way to somewhere, definitely wouldn't mind learning a little more about the city's history.

Couldn't find anything I got on my list but should you happen to encounter a '89-93 rear wiper motor or passenger headlight trim, let me know!

Last stretch of public transport, this will be our ride of choice.
