I'm about to go and look at a 1996 SAAB 9000 CS I, any pitfalls I should be aware of? Even Honest John rates them so they must be good.

Nicey.

I think they look very smart though so I can give it the Shite_Meister seal of approval, and here he is:

What engine? I would be looking at the state of the ashtray for dried up boiled sweets and I'd also be sniffing the rear seat incase there was some suspicious stains on it, other than that I'd be looking to make sure it started and that the wheels were all there. On a more serious note I think you need to ask Keith Adams as he has I think two(?) of these.

Posted

Keith's also kicks out some 300bhp...I think the usual checks for rear wheelarch/sills and rot around the windscreen are wise.

Do these have the wank slave cylinder-in-gearbox arrangement, assuming it's manual of course?

Posted

:lol:It's a rip-roaring na 2.0 job. There is a bit of grot around the lower offside corner of the screen, but it looks tidy apart from that

Posted

Yep, they do have a 'wank slave' cylinder in the 'bell'housing, however the subframe does hinge in the middle to get it's 'box' out. Replacement 'wanks slaves' are availiable from GSF last time i looked. Still a big job if they go.Boxes can be weak on them, was the downfall of both of mine. Engines are strong but listen for timing chain rattle - which makes them sound like they're fizzing when revved. They do rot, around the screen, door bottoms and rear wheel arches.Generally very comfortable, with lots of toys, most of which will probably still work.

There's a 9000CS parked a few doors down with a piece of card in the window with £650 on it. Probably a 2 litre as it has steelies with trims. Looks tidy but is a multi-hued collection of reds

Obviously it's a big car and therefore more to go wrong etc etc but all in all quite nice cars to live with. Some things do have a tendency to go without any notice. the DI unit and clutch both went on Mrs_cav's without any notice, which was not cheap. Petrol tank straps are also weak spots but not too expensive/complex to replace.ABS sensor issues are quite common too but the saabscene forum has loads of usefull info on these. That's probably your best bet for further info in general actually. Some consumable bits aren't as cheap as you might expect and finding them in scrappers might be more of an issue than a couple of years ago. I struggled recently. I'm hoping that I've sorted the ABS issues now on our 2.0LPT, so if it passes on Thursday it will shortly be up for sale, if you're interested?

SCTSH_ANDY has 3! It's safe to say he likes them. And he doesn't like much.

Eh? I can think of a shit load of small cars with way more potential 'fail' parts than my Saab.

It has been "brought" home.I was sold on it pretty quickly, it just has a nice feel about it and loads of SAAB c900 carry-over switchgear which made me feel at home at once. It has a few wee niggles like the ignition key which doesn't return, knackered thermostat and a slightly parpy exhaust, but nothing major. Everything works apart from the bust brake bulb warning lights on the instrument panel, which are lit up even though the bulbs are fine. The 9000 is mega relaxing to drive and even on the local moorland racetrack (aka A940/A939) on the way home it was unflustered.I couldn't find any wank slaves contained within, for that oversight I haggled him down to £420.

Bargain now get some moar pics up pronto inc the interior, I'm getting serious wantage for one of these in that colour now.Saw a white 9000 tonight in a car-park, I immediately thought of you (which is odd as I've never met you) not that it is remotely interesting and indeed could be slightly worrying.

*Cough*And they only pop the gearboxes if you rag the bollocks off them in first and second. Saabflight sell a specially mapped ECU that limits the amount of torque you can deploy in 1st and 2nd. You can only have full pelt from 3rd onwards. Helps you make more subtle getaways anyway.SCTSH_ANDY's 9000 Carlsson \ Aero hybrid thing will end up with 400 brake when he's finished with it. How long he'll go before taking out half of Cheshire remains to be seen however.

My mate, SCTSH_DAVE, reckons he's come up with a simple gearbox mod to stop them breaking so easily.

Hey, praps we can set up SCTSH_DAVE and SCTSH_ANDY chatting like those dancing sunflowers, and work out a solution that benefits all of Saab kind.

Yeah, you've not seen SCTSH_ANDY drive. He took my Piazza out for a drive and wound it up to 100 mph on Old Hall Road (no mean feat) before declaring the turbo and power delivery 'shite'.We then tackled the infamous DECKERS MINI ROUNDABOUTS a bit sideways, with me man JMS_MCGEE hanging on for dear life and screaming like a wee girl. It was at that point SCTSH_ANDY worked out it was RWD.'I couldn't tell by looking at it' he later commented.

I think that's tremendous. Well done for getting it, and I hope you get loads of enjoyment and fun from it.

I'll get the exact details and let you know. Basically in involves replacing a collapsible spacer with a solid one that's been machined to the right length.

I'd like a Saab 9000, i'd really like an early flat face NA one on about a G reg. They are a great looking mota and remind me of the 'good ole days' when there were interesting and credible alternatives available to BMW's Mercs and Audis.

That's why SCTSH_ANDY has 3. He also had a GSI 3000 Carlton when he lived in SCTLND, but it was the stolen. Dammit.

He won't like me much for posting this, but here's one of his Carlssons:

Who on earth is this Scottish Andy geezer, the adventures of whom we regularly hear about. Not a miserable tennis playing ginge is he by any chance?

SCTSH_ANDY is a long time friend of mine. He's one of the two people I share the Wat_dump with, and prefers his cars on the vintage modern side of shite, particulary Peugeots and Saabs. Anything after the 306 and into the GM era is VERBOTEN as far as he is concerned.

He could buy himself a very nice modern car, but he thinks they're all bollocks and uneccessarily complicated. He despises my C4 but thinks the Amazon is too old and shite. He'd rather smoke around in his 9000 Carlsson. He's currently building up a 405 Mi16 for his Mrs to blezz around in. At the moment she's running his other 9000 Carlsson - the white one. Her friends are all baffled and regularly inform her that the Saabs are 'shit and old' and that she should 'buy a nice new Fiesta or something, they're proper ladies' cars'.

He's also had two Mi16x4s, both of which were bought (and wrecked) by our mutual mong-friend Dave, and countless 309 GTIs.

He doesn't do forums though. Hates them. Used to be on the PeugeotSport board but fell out with some of the more armchair mechanic type of established member. He knows what type of things work because he's been there and had it in bits, or broken it.

I mention him a lot because he has a hardcore SHITE ethos, and generally does things the way he wants to do them. We get on well.

nice score, I'd love a 9000 to go with the wife's 9-5 but on the off chance one pops up for sale round here they all seem to be complete utter bags of wank......except for one that's very very mint but he wants about 3k for it

There was a 9000 Aero running 420bhp at Marham on Saturday. It went pop on it second lap of the day. There was another Aero there which was running just under 400bhp - it ran fine all day (apart from a dodgy idle control valve), a contrast to last April when it melted a piston. Aeros have traction control, though, which presumably helps with the torque steer.

'80s dashboard ftw. There's no glovebox at all! It's filled with airbag

It has some neat features inside like this utterly blinding map-reading light.

I've driven it a bit now and although it's sluggish and only does 30MPG (gr8 4 unleaded @ 125.9p/l) I love it - just feels like a proper 'executive' car and is so relaxing to drive.

The plan is to do some Hirst-style tinkering, tidy it up a little, get some gun gum on the exhaust, change the engine and gearbox oil, change the thermostat and coolant and keep it as a back-up car.

Not a unique viewpoint here

Is the driver's seat set quite high on these? I tried to lower it but broke the handle instead. It's not uncomfortable, but I can't see the 50,60,70 marks on the speedo and there isn't much space between the steering wheel and seat. Thankfully there's no sunroof otherwise I'd be stooped over the wheel.I managed to get 60MPG on the average MPG readout... Not long after resetting it, with my foot off the accelerator pedal, downhill. 35MPG seems a healthy average now.
