Time for an odyssey to collect an elderly vehicle and reunite it with Dad, for whom it was iis first ever set of wheels.

There is no need to apologise for sausage count on Autoshite.

I've had fantasies about buying an Ital for my dad just to see the look on his face when I present the keys to him...

I wanted to do the same with a HA Viva van. Well that won't be happening now at them prices 😕

When you say reunite do you mean it's the actual same car, or just one very similar ?  My dad's first car was a 1959 mini in 1959. He says it was shit and he's driven Fords ever since (apart from an avenger which he says was shit)

I think he'd he be rather cross if we found and bought him any mini.

Choose speed.

Amazingly it actually looked completely bone stock standard! Plus were were already south of Telford by then. I suspect it's one of the few actual unmolested original Beetles left....

To quote Allo Allo: "The very same"

Grandfather kept it when dad moved onto bigger and better things, it's been hiding in a dusty corner of his workshop all these years (since about 1975). Last year as a 65th birthday present he recommissioned it and gifted it back to dad, it's taken this long to sort a garage space out for it up at the parents house.

Bit of a delay in response whilst I've been navigating , talking,  unloading, loading and eating!

11.30 - finally a break in the rain!

12:00 - Hertford.

-2 Seats

As part of the trip, dropped off some Jetstream 41 seats to a very nice chap involved with the restoration of an airframe down at Eastbourne. Turns out it's a small world, he's also a pilot of and close friend to the owner of the Vampire I flew in a couple of years ago!

time for a short trundle up the road....

13:00  - Ware (where?!)

+1 bacon sandwich and Swiss roll

-1 full bladder

+1 Autoshite

+1 box of assorted fasteners and aircraft fixings

A warm welcome from the grandparents, and time to take charge of the shite in question. Let's see who guessed the closest to what it is.....

Ta da!

Same as any show, there's some good, some bad and some bloody awful. Anathema if you're allergic to cars with silly suspension and wheels though, I suppose.

That looks the double of one that my neighbour rattled around on when I was a wee lad. Strong memories there :)

I bet he'll be over the moon ❤️

Indeed! Who'd want a car when you could have 50 ripsnorting CCs of cold war German excellence? 😁

After this NSU he apparently owned a Zundapp which came to grief when the front mudguard fell off and jammed the wheel whilst he was showing off 😂

18:20 - Cheshire, aaaaaaand finally home (for me).

One bike delivered, I'm stopping here for the night too

One satisfied friend, with a larger than expected payment from the parents. He's now got another hour back to his base on the Wirral.

Having battled appalling weather all day, time for some warming winter dinner.....

Turns out I was wrong slightly on dates: Dad says he last rode this bike in 1973!

And so, we tried to fire the beast today.
Although it was recommissioned and run by Grandfather, that was 15 months ago.  Today, despite having fuel in the tank, the fuel tap turned on, and a good spark on the plug, it just wouldn't quite fire.

My guess is the fuel that was in the carb has set into varnish, however further investigation awaits next weekend!

NSU Quicklys were imported by Vincent motorcycles of Stevenage. (Until Vincent went bust in ‘54)

So if it is an early one, it didn’t go far from “home”.

Never knew that!

This is a 1962 so a later one, were they imported directly by NSU at that point?

Meanwhile, my uncle has added an anecdote about it when I put the picture up on Facebook:

My brother had a couple of Quicklys back in the late '70s. One was beige, the other had been modded with the tank from Bantam. They cost about £15 each and got him to work until he got something bigger.

My brother also had one in the early '70s.  It was his first powered machine and was cheap but running.  We got it taxed, tested and I could ride it on my Norwich Union 'Rider' policy so, as he had not got his licence or insurance sorted out when dad was posted from RAF Nocton Hall to RAF Halton (brother still lived with parents - he's about 4.5 years younger than me), I rode it to the new address for him.  I recall it being very buzzy compared to my Peugeot BBCT moped and, sure enough, this caused bulbs to fail and the tank clamps to come loose on the way.  He went on to restore it thoroughly and went on quite a few long trips to Wales where its gearbox was handy for getting up hills.  My Peugeot, bought in the Netherlands in 1967, was a single speed and always required pedal assistance on anything steeper than 1 in 10.
