Quick update.

currently on my way home from work when the oil light came on.

So I pulled over and checked the oil. She’s on minimum and I’ve got 2.5 miles to do and no top up.

It's not one of those automatic 'kill it before it dies' electronic gizmos is it? Maybe a top-up will bring it back?

Possibly?

Hopefully?

Oh shit 😕

This is what I’m hoping. But the lack of power got worse and worse before it came to a complete stop.

thoughts and prayers going out. I was determined to get it to 200k!

Well I got home just after 7pm. It’s left with my mate because I CBA pulling it to bits, and if I did, it would only take me ages to address it. So we will see what comes of it

looks like the back up car will be pushed straight back into service!

Sorry to see this!

As far as I know TD5s don't have an oil level sensor, so the oil light is just an oil pressure 'too late' light.

It's a long time since I've heard of the oil pump bolt problem - they've probably all failed or been loctite'd long ago.

Looks like possibly some metallic traces in the oil on the dipstick - I'd pull the oil filter and have a proper look in the folds for any metal, bearing material etc. Of course these have the centrifuge filter as well.

Fingers crossed it'll go again!

I agree from what you've said that it's probably seized and died because of lack of oil pressure. Bollocks.

Looks to have had enough oil in it, too, which would suggest a pump issue. Double bollocks.

You'll feel like looking at it again at some point.

Also, if it makes you feel better here's what I did to my RRC back axle the other weekend. It sounds grim:

Got a Disco 300TDI 24 spline lined up ready to replace the whole thing.

Nah, I drove it. Freezing rain and couldn't be arsed hanging about!

Hope it isn't anything too awful.

My sole experience with these was being given a V8 petrol one for free from some guy and by the time I drove it the 5 miles or so back to the workshop I swear it had used 1/8th of a tank 🤣🤣🤣.

It went well and sounded great but I couldn't cope with the conservatory on wheels handling.

I only really kept it a few days and kept getting inundated with scrap boys trying to buy it, obvs because it's got aluminium in it. A bit of a bidding war went on between them and I think I let it go for £300 back in 2009. I felt a bit bad as the owner actually seemed to really like it and was hoping I could fix it because he'd had all sorts of running issues with it and hence it had stood for a while.

It ran ok to get me back on my big battery but I was sure it was going to break soon and I couldn't afford the petrol in it anyway 🤣🤣.

I think it was the first shape though but 5dr?

Want rusty either that I could see but you can't save them all.

These were what all the Billy big bollox boys drove when I was about 18 and I really wanted one for years but they always seemed expensive until they were worth fuck all and now they're silly money again. Very much like my 328i cab, worth literally scrap about 6 years ago but now quite sought after and pulling big money.

Yes, the issue with buying a parts donor will be prices. They’re going back up and at an alarming rate. Buying a doner would be fine as I can hear and see it running. Buying an engine on its own will be a huge gamble ….. still no news from the garage

I know a fair number of people locally in the 'scene' (like properly know, in real life 😉) who might be able to find / have a decently priced, worthwhile TD5 engine for not too many ££ if you end up needing one. Give me a shout if it goes that way.

Shit luck @sutty2006. Hopefully it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Fingers crossed for ya.

UPDATE.

no news from the garage. But my window of opportunity for picking up an engine was closing so I did the right thing and turned the camper project BACK into a van and headed off to the Welsh boarder somewhere near Ludlow and picked this TD5 up. It’s a runner “apparently” but will need freshening up and a few jobs doing before it’s fit to see another Landrover.

Well our D2 TD5 supposedly drove under its own steam* today, first time in a year. Cue a domestic in the pub this afternoon.
