Many reasons NOT to buy a discovery 2. MOT PASSED!

Uggghhhhh. I really didn’t want this job. I’d had my disco towed to a mates garage with the intention of him fixing this for me or swapping the engine for me. That’s not happened. I’ve got today and tomorrow off booked on flex so my intention was to help out. However, I’ve got this far on my own. If I’d wanted to do this on my own, I’d have done it at home. But oh well.

But how, Batman?

The bumper and front end are still in situ. Ahhh, it's not an Audi ;-)

My TD5 goes back into regular commuting duties as of Monday. Not sure what to do with the new car I bought for my missus early last summer now. UNGRATEFUL.

Today has been particularly unproductive. Both engines are done with now. I’ve stripped a few parts off the new one and the old one and done a switcharoo.

IMG_9162.jpeg.ad8afa7f580995975b82f19ad81d8a5a.jpeg

removed the td5 torque converter and fitted the v8 one. Upon fitting the flex plate I did some measuring of how far the flex plate protrudes from the engine and it was 20mm more than the gap I had from the bell housing to the torque converter. Knowing full well that this would cause me issues, I did some digging. The adapter kit I was sold is completely wrong and wouldn’t work with this torque converter. That put a complete stop to this job. I’ve ordered the adapter kit from Ashcroft which will arrive on Monday, but I don’t have any days left to take off. So I’ll have to do it after work for a couple of hours each day.

so in the meantime, I dropped the oil from the old engine

and pulled the sump off to reveal the oil p……….

ohh. Where’s that gone?

ahh there you are. Cheeky beggar!

and that’s it. The oil pump pulley bolt has been working its way loose, then the bolt has snapped and pulley fell off.

until next time!

At least you've got to the bottom of it.

Worth rebuilding the old engine to keep as a spare? That might motivate the new engine to behave just to spite you.

Been told a couple of times to rebuild the old engine. But I genuinely don’t want to start throwing cash and time at an engine I might not need. I’m going to strip it, and keep the head if it’s ok because

looking up the cost to buy a new AMC head is about 1500-1800 English pounds! Second hand they’re worth 500 so if I ever sell the discovery, I’ve got myself a little cash nest egg. Hehe.

Yeah fair enough. For some reason I assumed that the oil pump failure led to timing issues. But if it's oil starvation that's caused the problem I think your route is the best.

I’ve heard various outcomes. If the oil pump comes off at speed (let’s say motorway) then I recon the slack in the chain would cause catastrophic failure. But seeing as I was only doing about 15/20 at the time the light came on, and was able to restart and continue 1/4 a mile down the road before it ground to a halt tells me the timing stayed pretty well timed before oil starvation stopped it.

On top of this, the turbo is scrap. Excessive lateral movement (and I mean, EXCESSIVE) could have been caused by oil starvation…..or was it toast beforehand? That’s something we will never find out. 😭

Ashcroft do a good job of sending parts out. Ordered adapter kit Friday afternoon, it landed at the garage around 11am this morning. I finished work at 1530 and headed straight up and got stuck straight in. I needed to get this in before end of play today (6pm)

and it was in by 1645.

now comes the hard part of finding where all the bits n bobs are 😂

Fuck me that was hard work.

The apprentices were bored yesterday and bolted some stuff on. I had to remove pretty much everything including the radiator pack as they’d not fitted the trans cooler in place and it was rattling around. But hey, that was a stressful evening. Today, I’ve fitted some last parts and filled the coolant up, and after priming the fuel up, it runs!

Good on you for sticking with it 👍

If it was ours I'd have burnt it where it had stopped 💥

Brilliant job - you must be well pleased.

Deffo worth keeping the head, agreed. You now have insurance against the other common TD5 failure 🤣

Best get rustproofing the back end of that chassis 😉

It truely hates me.

So it’s running and driving.

I’ve got an oil leak from the turbo return pipe gasket. Picked up another new gasket yesterday and went up to fit it today. Once fitted, it initially didn’t leak, but after a short road test, it was pissing out. I now don’t know if this is because of a cheap aftermarket gasket, or the return pipe is split, or the turbo body is cracked. Either way, it needs a can of petrol and a match. I’m going to drag it’s sorry ass home tomorrow on a straight bar. 🖕

Well, it’s back home. The sprinter camper project turned breakdown van did a solid job of dragging it home on my solid bar.  I can fix this now, at my own leisure.

Oil leak. Return pipe flange warped. Must have got really hot when there was no oil passing through it.
