Crppage scheme is dead? but what of the cars?

You've probably seen this already - apologies! it IS a dailymail link full of the usual rhetoric, but the photos show the situation.

Looking at that photo, there are many old and some not so old examples of tat that I'd happily roll in. There's an Audi A6, several BMWs, Mercs, And 80s Corolla! and quite a few Jeep Cherokees. Anyway - will they really be scrapped? or is it possible they'll be exported to developing countries as is suggested in the feedback.

Looking at the picture - all of those cars must have MOTs to qualify for the scheme. It's an airport runway full of normal cars!

Any new thoughts on this?

Ha! Never owned anything as recent as any of those!Did manage to come by a load of parts, in the shape of a scrappage scheme car - "will you sell every part, then?" I asked the breaker's yard. "yes" . "Will you keep them all nicely together please, in fact leave it just as it is". "Sure, not a problem."So a rather lovely 70s classic with one owner from new, garaged all its life, mint order, found its way from the knacker's yard. I'll use all those lovely bits to rebuild another...

I'll slowly replace every single bit on the existing car with that from the scrappage one. Quite legal and above board, as long as not done all at once.

Surely you do not mean removing it's I.D ?

It's IDless, of course. Simply a load of spare parts waiting to enhance my existing car, whose ID is just fine.

Yes, it'll be a long, arduous and thankless task but well worth it in the end.

all those driveable cars for what? to be replaced by an equal amount of newer cars  that's really going to help in their policy to get us out of our cars and use public transport  just shows what a complete shirt lifting tosser mandelson is...what about the people who couldn't afford new cars and are driving around in worse shite than what is sat on that airstrip?let them trade their shite in for something from the airstrip..look quite cool rolling up to sign on in a 7 series bmw :D

As somebody once said on this humble site, the Government tell us to recycle our carrier bags but encourage us to throw away our (relatively new, roadworthy cars).I totally agree that the cars on these airstrips that are destined for scrappage ought to be put to some kind of economic use - maybe used for parts for us sensible folk who whould rather reuse rather that recycle or exported cheaply to 3rd world countries.I dont want to get into a whole new scrappage arguement as I think we've had plenty on here already, but I just think it is just such a waste of perfectly serviceable cars.

*sigh*Best not read the comments too much if you get easily wound up either.Still, theres some tidy looking cars there. GR8 4 Export...

Theres some tasty numbers in the second photo. Looks like a tidy 80's Corolla, 2 ford Pumas, a Prairie and a shed load of executive stuff there.

If scrappage had happened 25 or more years ago every decent car that went through the scheme would have been routinely and openly ringed.

This article was drawn to my attention elsewhere - I was quite taken by the BMW 5-series at the top right of the pic, the Saab 900 convertible and the Fiat Coupé at the bottom. Would gladly swap my Escort for any of those. What a waste. :(

I was thinking about this a bit after I read it.These cars have already gone from the dealerships they were traded in at. Presumably to a third party such as Copart or whoever has a contract for buying up large number of them. That third party has rather than sending them straight for dismantling or straight over the weighbridge moved them, probably by transporter so incurring reasonable expense to an airstrip they are renting from MOD. This all costs money. Money they expect to earn back out of them somehow. Now, from the second picture, these look like the better pickings of scrappage - Golfs, BMs etc not mouldy old life expired Escorts and the like.Whats the liklihood that these cars despite having been 'destroyed' will end up on the streets of Lithuania / Poland or somesuch within a few months where even after a LHD conversion will still be pretty desireable and valuable.I'd certainly stick a tenner on it.

I wonder if they would let me borrow any of them for film work? I can bring me own plates.....

Agreed, theres certainly no "dross" in there as such. Im sure all the scabby astras were crushed as soon as they left the dealerships.Export? I heard that wasnt allowed, but outside the E.U whos to know?

With Parliament now officially dissolved and not much chance of Labour getting back in, surely the next party in office could be harrassed into letting these perfectly servicable vehicles be put to use? As someone wrote on the article feedback, people who earn less than a certain amount could register to have one of these cars for free.

That would surely bugger up the used car market. You'd have to gve away your secondhand car to compete! Those perfectly servicable cars lined up on the runways at Thurleigh are exactly the type of vehicle the scrappage scheme is aimed at. They have years of life left in them but have been taken off the road prematurely. Most of the old clunkers people would like to exchange for one of these usable cars are at the end of their lives, Maybe only an MOT away from the crusher. These old bangers dont need a government sponsored campaign to get them from the streets as they have a limited amount of life left anyway.
Posted

Thats exactly my point though, the majority of the cars on that runway are servicable for the next 5 years or so and were chopped in by people who could afford/were dumb enough to let a £3k or £4k car go for £2k. People who run around in end of life Mondeos, Vectras and the like cant afford to run out and get a new car on scrappage, so let them have these decent cars and get the true shite off the roads.

Posted

But the true shite will probably be off the road in 6 to 12 months anyway, sho why pay people 2k to do it?

That's a good idea! But who would you ask?

surely those are the cars going for export! I can' believe those are being saved and storage paid on them unless they are going to be sold and reused.

Would be a terrible thing if they got stolen off set though.......
