Favourite car sound?

I need to nominate the Citroen GS/A engine for this! yep it's a small engine but the little flat 4 air cooled boxer just has a great exhaust note for such an understated set up.

Seconded, my parents' GS Break sounded incredible when the hole in the exhaust grew to about an inch big... very racy!

I've been researching this long & hard (a couple of evenings browsing on You-Tube!) to see if I can locate my favourite car noises. I wasn't disappointed & I hope you won't be either! Please take the time to hear each one, I doubt you'll regret it! :DFirstly the lovely sound of old skool VAG products (why don't they sound like this anymore?)http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf58LUM2XhAhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MRTwM9yLRTYhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UiOKpKgwx-khttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=X2_IkQkfEL0http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YizRkunKd7Ihttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tA2KVGe8KW0http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RnHGcohEJ8kMy favourite BMW sounds.....http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-fGyv3vwg00I'm not into this idiotic rubber burning, tyre shredding, squealing, screeching business. Just try & listen for the engine.....if you can!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dhWezCIkkoIhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JlzLSmw9NIUhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sOhVB7q2Dvg&feature=relatedLovely Rover V8s.....http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_KWMuqTASPEhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5uW_EDPRQ6chttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=r7h3N1fLUQIhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=meWkzLyW_II&feature=relatedNow the Alfas....http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8GEEh-bnH-Uhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bN3DJ9FgblAhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GfhR5IHkKZghttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TWn6_6yJCHchttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=d7UP4pfyzDUhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bk8Eoh9qPDQhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KSb3ykPfhxg&feature=relatedNow a veritable orchestra of them!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OPsf7v-0RBIToyota Supra MkIVThe loudest car I've ever heard on the public road was a Supra MkIV! We were on the M25 once when we heard what sounded like an earthquake, but on looking around we couldn't see what was causing it. It was getting louder & louder & I realised it was coming from a Supra up ahead that we were gaining on (it wasn't exactly pushing itself). It was at least 10 cars length away from us when we first heard it, yet it sounded like it was right next to us! Incredible!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=L8loegvqoowSupra MkIII like my mum's.....http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q-uGRLaHWISpecial treat = this one IS mum's!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ldDFXntMXtgNow for my favourite sound of the lot, modern high powered Mercedes', the sound is unbelievable, like dragsters! 8)http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6WnD7BX2qswhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cr1A_c3Ntcghttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JlxohilSXiIhttp://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zcLeinkf7msSuch raucous brutal sounds, shame I'll never be able to afford the cars creating them! :( PS: unrelated but a nice Alfa tribute!http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1UT6M8M-IrU

Nobody has mentioned th AC Cobra  Definitely the best exhaust note on any car ever made IMO 8)8) ...

My fave car sound is a match between my land rover doing about 24mph in top gear flat out up a hill - sounds like a tractor, and a straight-6 engine (P or D).

Surely comes under the general V8 sounds heading tha a few of us have mentioned.

Au contrair 55bloke, it not only makes the best sound but if you are waiting behind one at the traffic lights, the engine's tickover, combined with those exhausts makes your car vibrate  (I know, Im' sad but I just thought you'd be interested :oops: )

One of the best sounds for me, and guaranteed to induce damp patches  , is nigh on any TVR.http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=J4fHVw4-jh8

Damn straight! TVRs are the one thing I omitted from my list - doh! That Cerbera above sounds especially nice - I'd love one as a weekend toy! 8)

I love the sound of any old 6 cylinder BMW. I've always thought Alfasuds sounded amazing as well (Much nicer than a Subaru flat 4). I used to think my Dads old Opel Kadett D 1.3 sounded cool also. I could be wrong on that one though.

The intoxicating sound of my old 90 Quattro... 2226cc 5 cyl with the baffles gone in the back box!

Absolutely ace car to drive & I'd go as far to say one of THE best cars I've ever driven... and I've driven lots. Instantanious performance anywhere in the rev range made driving it a joy. I didn't get that in my V6 Coupe that you can just make out in the background of the picture.

How I miss this car.

background of the picture? :?

Knew I had forgotten something! Please also note the clever black electrical tape repairs to the holed bodywork. The pic doesn't highlight the mismatching drivers seat backrest however. All these top quality repairs carried out by my good self.

Where is it now? I love the full length reflector across the rear of the 90s & 200s continuing the colour of the rear lights. Some of the original Saab 9000s also had something similar!

Possibly in the Aberdeen area. Isn't the reflector so 80's ?!!I originally sold the car to a friend who had wanted one since he was a kid. He loved it but sadly had/has no clue about cars & didn't really drive it enough either as he works out at sea. It gradually fell into disrepair, what with brakes seizing on it & the alternator giving up the ghost so was passed back to me to sell.I advertised it in CCW & a mature guy bought it saying he'd fix it up & wanted to do a S2 engine conversion. The SORN since expired so we can assume that never happened. The guy claimed to own a Walter Rohls rally 90 Quattro so maybe he used my one for parts :(There going up in value a little but I think folk buy them to use as track day cars which will ultimately kill them off.

Nobody has mentioned the Triumph straight 6 - glorious noise, sounds better than any jag lump I've ever heard... the Datsun 240Z makes a nice straight 6 howl as well!Best sounding Ford for me would be a BDA engined Escort at full chat.V8 wise, ye olde ford flathead & the homebrewed TVR V8 in the Cerberra get my vote I think.

Anyone remember the Suzuki GT750, 1970s 2-stroke watercooled triple? That made a glorious sound.

A GLORIOUS sound indeed! I own one... and it's music to my ears every time I ride it and hear the WAIL of the standard exhaust system... nothing quite like it in my opinion, but each to their own I suppose ;)

For me, Alfa V6, Alfa boxer and to be fair the Twin Spark makes a nice racket.

I also have to admit to liking the sound of the PSA/Renault 14 suitcase engine. Have no idea why, and I've just said that out loud haven't I...

Mk2 xr2. the sound of youth! and smell of wheelspun tyres and easy young lasses. ahhhhhh

This is my favourite sound in the world, yes im wierd!:

sidevalve reliant, precious little syncro, box and axle winding up to make music!

BMW 6-cyl with a decent (not overkill) exhaust is joy. Also my old 4-banger BMW sounded glorious at full chat (though too bland at town pootlage). RV8, always a winner, especially in a fruity SD1. The Alfa 155 my mate had off Wakely had just about the most glorious engine note I think I have heard from a not-all-that-interesting car.

I'm a big fan of straight six's, my chevy had twin Fenton manifolds with a single cherry bomb under the passenger seat. It made a noise like an angry Norse god tearing up sails.

V8. Any will do but preferably an American one, they are just so right. I have friends in Cyprus with Stags, which I loved to drive behind on club events. Rumble rumble!

NON-RELIGIOUS REFERENCE THREAD REVIVAL, POPULAR SUPERHERO TURNED CAMP SUNDAY MORNING 60'S SLAPSTICK CHARACTER!

6 years! 6 years! Nearly as long as Batman has been off our screens!

I think for me it's most engines wearing Webers or Dellortos. Usually on there to help feed a high duration cam with plenty of overlap and creates a lovely pounding intake roar that pales the exhaust note into insignificance. The more cylinders the better, too! They do something that injection doesn't do, and that's bark as soon as you open the throttle - there's no delay like there is with injection while it decides how much fuel to throw in.

I think a well tuned B-Series sounds great with a single 45 side-draught. It's that heavily tuned sound battling against a compromised design and the result is audible war. The A-Series kind of has it, but the added capacity of the B amplifies the sound of struggling conflicts of purpose. It's between the cam making as much power as possible and a reluctant iron boat anchor trying to remain as simple and cheap to build as possible. Fantastic sound!

As a Ford owner with a balls-out pre-crossflow, I have to say that I don't like the sound of Ford engines. It's something about that buzz that they traditionally make that I find a bit grating to the ears.

Stag V8 sounds better thanrover V8.

Essex better than cologne.

As for bullitt, the car sounds were added later and taken from a ford GT 40.
