Those LED replacement bulb things.

Not the silly blue ones, but the ones you replace side / number plate / brake light bulbs with. I fancy giving the SD1 a bit of illumination (and give the alternator an easier time..)Anyone got any experience of 'em? Where's best to get 'em.

Come the revolution, I will outlaw LED brake lights. They make my eyes go funny, the ones on current Peugeots are the worst culprits.

I like 'em. They work.I doubt that led 'bulbs' will make your eyes go funny when they're behind SD1 light lenses. It's just that looking at the rear lights on the SD1 they're not that bright, they're as they would have been new, but I'd be happier if they were a bit brighter. People are used to bright brake lights, the dim old '80s ones on the SD1, combined with no centre brake light mean that people are less likely to notice it stopping. Not Autoshitists, naturally, we're all perfect, but some middle aged English teacher full of last nights Vodka on the way to work needs all the advance warning they can get.

Pete your local halfrauds or Motorworld may have them.If not the bay of E certainly will.If all else fails, whack a picture of the bulb up on here, and i will have a word with my "Barry Boy" mate, as he gets alot of stuff like that for his Rape-on-wheels.

I don't think LEDs are up to the job yet, especially in a unit that's designed for a filament bulb. The original unit is designed to work with light coming from all angles, which an LED doesn't provide. Even "proper" LED lights are shit, which is why they have to be bright enough to burn your retina.Have you ever come across halogen brake light bulbs? I've never tried them but they might be the answer here.

I'm with you brada. Too bright, blind me and the flickering makes it look like it's a strobe. Hate the things. WHY AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICES THIS?

You often see badly barried Corsas and Saxos with LED indicator bulbs, but the owners are obviously not bright enough to work out that an LED draws a lot less current than an incandescent bulb and therefore the flasher unit isn't going to work properly. I'm pretty sure you can buy LED bulbs with built-in resistors to increase the current draw to somewhere around 21W, but presumably they're more expensive.I've only ever had two cars with LED bulbs (not including high-level brake lights)- the 166s had them in the rear indicators. I didn't like them much - didn't think they were bright enough.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's brain gets scrambled by the Pug lamps!

It's for the idiots who only put their lights on when it's dark.

I have actual experience of them.My 806 has four tail lights. Two in the clusters and two in the tailgate.Everytime someone slammed the tailgate with the lights on they would blow.So I bought some LED ones.Problems:-1. The "bulb" was bigger than the original 5W bulb and therefore a total bastard to get through the hole in the back of the reflector.2. They only work if there is +12 on the centre contact and 0V on the outer bit. A normal bulb doesn't care. 806 tailgate side lights have 0V on the centre and 12V on the outer bit...Had to take the thing to bits and solder all the LEDs in the other way round.3. They only shine light straight out. An ordinary bulb shines lights in all directions and then bounces off the reflector to make the light light in the shape that Peugeot intended. With the LED bulb I just get round glow in the middle rather than the 806 shape. Not that anyone else has noticed, not even my ultra strict MOT man. However, 4 years on they are still working, which is a good thing from a safety point of view.

I've got some wide angle indicator leds on my Astra. You need to fit a ballast resistor inline though to fool the flasher unit into thinking they are pukka bulbs.

I've got a red one for the rear foglight on the Panda. It is bright, but I'd agree that it gives a very narrow beam of light and doesn't 'fill' the reflector. Mr MOT man has never queried it though.

You can get different bulbs with extra leds around the edge as well to get a more even spread- might be a better option?

I don't rate the yellow indicator leds as they look a bit green-tinged to my eyes (or is that just mild colour blindness...?!)

Agreed. The indicators make spots appear in my eyes. Can't be good whilst driving surely?

The A310s have quite small rear lights (from an R17) and they're a bit too low, so I've used the LED bulbs in the stop/tail. They are noticably brighter but still not great. I got them off one of the ebay sites.

After scanning the SD1 forum, it turns out that if I fit LED stop / tail lamps it screws up the bulb warning system :-(Dammit.

You need to fit these along with the leds and all will be well. Fools the warning system on our Saab.Ballast Resistors

I still think they are a retrograde step. I was watching brake lights while I was sitting in the usual "road with an 8 in it" queue on Friday and even the factory LED brake lights are less visible than the older bulb type.

From my own experience I think LED's are fine for the number plate lights and as side/marker lights - especially with multi-LED units.I bought mine on eBay and some of them are very cheap indeed - in fact all bulbs on eBay are probably about half the local shop price, including postage from half way around the bloody world!!!

I'm trying to lower power consumption while I'm at it. The SD1 rarely gets above 1500 rpm in town, so LED lights could be a good idea...
