Keep on truckin (in the slow lane)

Heard on 5 live today about trials on some dual 'A' roads in the Country where anything over 7.5 tons is restricted to the inside lane, sounds like a good idea to me, how many times have you been part of a long staggering line of traffic because an HGV limited to 56mph is trying to build up enough head of steam to pass another HGV limited to 56mph for mile after mile, quite often ending with the the 'overtaker' giving up and having to pull back in behind what it was attemting to pass....

Great idea. I hope they bring it in on the A1. Mile after mile of lorry "racing".

Doesn't seem to make much difference where its been tried on the A14 though. And what about all those vans that are between 3.5t and 7.5t that are also restricted to 56 - they'll still be able to overtake :?

And the A14. Ok, so let them overtake tractors but frankly if the inside truck refuses to yield when being overtaken, the driver should be shot. Snipers. Yes. That's the answer. Mwaa ha haa (sorry, I'm feeling a bit peculiar tonight).

The A55 is bad. It has the steepest hills on any A road and it's 50% trucks. Why they need to overtake anyway? No doubt they'll be harping on about 'trucker's rights', and being unfair, etc etc.

Its been trialled in a few places for a couple of years now. Its all down to common sense really, if your being overtaken, turn off the cruise control and back off a little!

Because it's all about keeping the speed up. That's the speed they can get up to, not more than that. You have to drop back, it's hours before you get back to the speed you were at. Until you have rocked back and forward over the steering wheel willing the van/truck to go just a bit faster you wouldn't understand.....

I'm waiting for them to ban them from all but the left two lanes on any motorway, eg the M1 or M25 or M40 where they are four lanes wide. NO NEED for three lanes being forced into a 56mph crawl. :x

Posted

Bugs the hell out of me but having driven a van that was restricted to 62mph I can understand why truckers want to overtake someone doing 2mph less.

It's not how you stand by your Truck*, it's how you race your Truck*. Remember that.*slight edit

Or "You can sleep in your truck but you can't race your house."

If all trucks had the same amount of power and weighed the same, then I could understand people's frustrations. But you'll find modern artics packing anything from 380-650bhp, and weighing anything from about 14-16 tonnes for one lugging an empty trailer to 44 tonnes fully-loaded. And any combination in between.Meanwhile most of us are too busy keeping the boss happy by getting from A to B as fast as possible whilst delivering all your lovely consumer durables, whilst avoiding suicidal knob-jockeys in BMW's, brain-dead women in Mummy-tanks and clueless OAP's in Nissan Micras to worry about holding car drivers up by a few nano-seconds.I'm easy to spot, if you come past me red with rage shaking your fist I'm the one blowing you a kiss and laughing. Gets 'em every time.

you know thats a funny thing that and a little on the arogant side, my bro was telling me about this a few months back, a trucker decided to pass him on a stretch off duel cariageway this took him a good few miles when said trucker finally got passed a large tailback had formed, the cars where then passing as normal and then the next thing my bro nearly sh1t bricks as the truck that had just passed him locked up and came to an abrupt stop.he was furiouse and jumped out the truck to give the truck driver hell when he saw a member off the public shouting up at the driver calling him all the names under the sun, the chap then proceded to knife the front tyre shouting up at the trucker then jumped into his car and sped off, looks like the trucker caught someone on a bad day

Maybe your bro should have eased off a little and let the truck get round?

, the chap then proceded to knife the front tyre

Surely with the amount of pressure in a trucks tyres that'd be a fairly bad idea?

well i certainly wouldnt try it  i bet the guy got off with a warning aswell thats if the cops could be bothered to find the chap

I saw a lorry with a blown out tyre on the trailer the other week, god knows how he did it but despite all the rubber and skidmarks he kept hold of it and had got it parked on the hard shoulder. Bet that was a fright.

You'd need a VERY sharp knife, too. And arrogant? Naaah. I'm sitting in air-conditioned luxury with the cruise control set at 90km/hr, a coffee on the go and Pearl Jam on the CD player. It's not arrogance, it's contentment. :)
