warren t claim Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Can we add the Metrocab to the Montego instrument list? I think so! Jo awaits! xxx
Mr H Sceptre Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 There was a ramp in the workshop known as Montego Bay because it always had a fucking Montego on it having the crank oil seal replaced, a major fault on early ones.Haha, I'd heard that the AA recovery guys in the 80's used to refer to the hard shoulder of motorways as 'Montego Bay'
RedSparrow Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Guess we can add Sherpa / Freight Rover vans too?
Lankytim Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 "Just have a look at the instrument binnacle please Jo"
Lankytim Posted March 31, 2010 Author Posted March 31, 2010 Googled her.. Her own website is very.. "arty" ;)I used to go out with a girl who looked very much like Jo Guest. When she sees me rolling in a Diesel Montego estate she'l regret the day she ditched me. Cow.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 The Montego was proof that BL had learned absolutely nothing about building cars and why 'development' is a sound idea.Ford Sierra in 1982. The trim was a bit shonky but they were pretty reliable, didn't develop rust within 3 years and piss oil everywhere.Cavalier Mark 2. Much the same but probably even better. Really lively 1300 and 1600 and possibly the best build quality of the mid range rep snotters.Montego. Right......let's use a VW Golf gearbox known for it's reliability but fit a plastic gear linkage rod that pops off. Water heated auto choke? Nope, lets's control it with a Lucas ECU. Fucking inspired. One cam cover on the S* Series? Fuck that, lets have two side by side to maximise oil leaks.Whilst we're there, let's not seam seal the inner to outer rear arch joints and use steel spring clips to retain the plastic trims around the windows so that they scrape back to bare metal.* S stood for shite. Honest.

Cavcraft Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 1993 Rover Montego 2.0TD Countryman Estate Just spotted this one on the bay, Something tells me it's not long of to the knackers yard.Bit of a wank listing really and don't see him getting two and half over the bridge for it. Engine worth a bit to a Landrover owner I suppose though.
M'coli Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 /\/\/\ Seller's good enough with the spanners, it should be mechanically sound. He also genuinely has a medical condition - an ankle problem - that has stopped him using manual gearboxes.Still, not sure it's worth £400...
Josh_Cohen Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 hello there there has been a lot of talk about montego's and i found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MG-MONTEGO-2-0i-E ... 4a9fc13d04

RichL Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Great thread I remember one of my mate's dad having a couple of estate's in the early 90's, both 1.6 LX's IIRC. First one was white and survived a fairly heavy front-ender with a Metro. The second a BRG one, mich nicer but bits of trim was always falling off, and not always due to the dog in the boot and us kids messing about. Electric windows, electric sunroof and central locking. I was impressed!!Edit: Think it was a wind up roof, but hey it ws tilt and slide!

Jozza Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 This thread is bringing back the memories! When I was young mum had Montego estates whilst dad had an MG Maestro 2000. The first Monty was white Austin Vanden Plas which met an untimely end in a crash with a Royal Mail Maestro van. That wrote it off so it was replaced with a G-reg 2.0 GTI estate (by which time they had become 'brandless' with just Montego badging) which put in 8 years of family abuse without many major issues. As for the MG Maestro- it began to rust so Dad sold it 'to get something better'. He came back one Saturday with a Russet Brown Allegro 2.....When I'm round at the folk's place tomorrow I'll dig through the photo albums and try and get some pics.
Lankytim Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 choice UK mods love that MG thats proper nice I remember my mums Maestro and and my dads Maestro van both ended up looking like that. All these BL clunkers were very easy to steal using a sharp screwdriver or similar. I remember seeing stacks of them burnt out dotted around Birmingham after being stolen by 12 year old joyriders.
RedSparrow Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Yeah the Austin & MG 'M' cars were notoriously easy to nick and hotwire. I think these and Vauxhall Astras and Belmonts caused the massive early '90s joyriding epidemic!
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 http://www.leboncoin.fr/vi/54054398.htm?ca=14_s and thats just around by me.. Fuckinell, French Gypos!

I remember seeing stacks of them burnt out dotted around Birmingham after being stolen by 12 year old joyriders. It didn't help that BL/ARG/Rover/MGR were located in the town. I know of a few cars that went with no effort at all thanks to keys 'procured' from the factory, includes a three day old MG ZS180 belonging to a mates father-in-law who had one of the very first...
Lankytim Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 Finally collected this Montego yesterday afternoon. Its a bit of a scabby old thing but has a good interior and the engine runs perfectly. It shouldnt be too difficult to MOT, needing a couple of patches on the drivers side sill. The front arches are a bit rough and the rears are full of filler, the passenger sill also has a whopping great dent in it. Shame it wasnt the rusty drivers sill! Inside is a pretty nice place to be, no obvious damage or wear other than to the headlining which has a few small tears in it. To make lovely it will need a pair of wings, a drivers sill, possibly a passenger sill and a pair of rear arches. The front bumper has flaking paint and the rear bumper is cracked, although a replacement rear bumper came with it but needs to be painted. Quite a bit of work but once done it would make a nice smart motor. Anyway, heres some really shit, out of focus pics... QUALITY. Ouch!! Now for TEH SCABORAMA Oh, and it is a Turbo! Anyone got a pair of wings, sills and rear arches??
chester drawers Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Jim Fisher Parts at 50 Watkin Street, Fenton ST4 4PF (01782 844278) may be able to source arch repair sections & sills. It’s a proper old skool Unipart agent. Marvel at the wooden wall panels and microfiche reader ^ Did you give him a try?
M'coli Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Get that plug off the injector pump and a screwdriver in there if it's not already been done - 95+ bhp FTW!!!
