Why would it make you look like a trader? Anybody can give a reciept, even for a private sale. If anything it's a necessity not optional. Also, it's the reciept that makes somebody the legal owner of a car, not the V5 so it's important you give/have one. Should the new owner not properly register the car, you would be liable for outstanding road tax and tickets or fines, and this proves you are no longer the owner.
