Future Classics

Had this discussion today with a few mates and it put me thinking......If you had just won the autoshite lottery and decided to buy some cars who's values are at or near rock bottom and hopefully increase over the next few years.5k limit per car including scene tax if applicable. What would you choose?

Give me a couple of years, and a top spec Citroen C6, definitely.

Sapphire Cosworth prices wont get much cheaper and fast Fords are always a good investment.

It's hard to say, near impossible, which cars will appreciate in value in the future (Ferraris seem to be the exception to this, most depreciating for about 25 years then appreciating to the sky). The stuff we all like as shite -- or at least the shite I like -- is usually completely unappreciated by everyone else. That's a big part of why I like it, and usually these cars are complete crap and when a few years old aren't worth anything. From an investment standpoint in the price range you're talking about ... I think we will definitely see values rise for the E30 M3 and probably next on the E36 BMW M3. Also the ST versions of recent Fords (Focus Mk1 and Mondeo Mk2 in particular) will probably fare pretty well so long as they're not tatty. Audi S4 will probably bring bigger coin down the road than now, the first generation one with the turbo 2.7 V6 in particular. Other than the Fords, none of these cars really have any appeal for me. From a futureshite standpoint? Anything big and Italian or big and French (so aforementioned C6 and the Renault Avantime, Fiat Multipla, even the shitbox Peugeot 607, Alfa 166). Pretty much any V8 saloon other than a Merc or BMW is a pretty clear safari into shite country. So the Chrysler 300C, Vauxhall versions of the Holden Monaro and Commodore SS/HSV. Let's add the MG ZT V8 to the list too, since it was a classic British shed job -- in this case, somehow turned a FWD sedan into a RWD V8 car with next to no development money. Audi A8 and S8 can join that group too.

I suspect the weird RWD V8 version of the Rover 75 or MG whatever it was will also be properly desirable shite in the UK at some point.

Right on.

I expect sierra xr4x4's will go skyward in the next few years as the older stuff becomes more unobtainable. At the moment you can still pick a decent one up sub - grand,

The MG ZT-T 260 is on my 'must own' list. The one I traded was absolutely frickin' superb. Could do with another 50 or 100 bhp but otherwise an absolutely brilliant car.

Well being Ford's modular V8 there are plenty of options for more power. Naturally supercharging comes to mind but Cobra head is a good start. What percentage have already arrived in gang banger hands?

I reckon big arsed Meganes, any Focus (people will happily buy a three door 1400 in order to create an ST replica) and the MG Z cars. As mentioned any Ford will have support although anything small, hottish, and unmolested will do. Not many unmolested Renault 5 GT Turbo's left for example. Allowing for the whole rat look thing going out, but then coming back into fashion, howsabout Passat and Golf estates in anticipation? Maybe get a few original "76" and Iron Cross decals and stash them in the boot so you can provide original genuine 2010 decals to future idiots? Maybe even take the paint off the bonnet now?

Posted

Smart Roadster.Maybe they already are 'classics', they had a really short production run and you don't see many. New Panda and all its varieties too? Especially the 4x4 and 100HP.

Posted

ROVER STREETWISE, thats one i'd like to stash away for future admiration.

Posted

What about the shoddy Streetwise copycats, the Citroen C3 XTR and VW Polo Dune?

Posted

Fiat Coupes,especially LE's & Plus's,Escort MK 5 RS 2000's,Calibra 4x4's?

Posted

I saw a Fiat Coupe the other day, it's a long time since I've seen one and I was taken aback by what a stunning piece of design it is. I wonder if Bangle's later designs will age so well.

Posted

Definately stuff like a 3 door Focus or anything even remotely resembling a sporty Ford.Nova Sport is another, pretty rare now and a definate future biggie in the money stakes.

Posted

Ford Puma and Fiat Coupe are my picks. I'd like to say mk1 MX5 (because I have one) but I think they'll always be like the Porsche 924/944 - demand never exceeding supply.

Posted

Alfa 145 Cloverleaf. Won't get much cheaper so picking up good one and sticking it away somewhere would be a good bet.Otherwise I'd bet on pretty much all 3 door Focus mk1, original Renault Twingo, most of the 'hot' hatches produced in the last fifteen years - Saxo VTS etc, last of the Rover range, Audi A2 (for rarity alone) plus loads more.

Posted

Daewoo Espero, eventually people will appreciate the crisp Bertone styling.

I'd say they'll be more like (and are already?) MGBs. An easy "classic" to own for anyone who doesn't necessarily know about cars. Massive accessory support so you can do the same personalisation as lots of other owners and a wide range of prices depending on whether you are looking at rusty barely MOT'd cars or enthusiast owned minters.I'd have said the V8 Rovers too if it hadn't already been mentioned. To be hunted down by the discerning older chap who knows a quality car when he sees one. Must get one before the oil runs out!I saw a totally unmolested early Subaru WRX the other day. Standard size exhaust even!

I see your Sedona and I raise you a KIA CLARUS.

If I had the cash spare I'd invest in a mint, bog standard R32 GT-R, preferably in the classic gunmetal grey. Unmolested examples are going to be non-existant in the future and I'd say the first of the modern GT-R's is an undoubted future classic....

I can see a time coming when mint original 80's Hot Hatches are worth a bit. Some already are but I reckon once the common ones (Golf GTi, GTE. XR3 etc) have gone out of reach pricewise, people will start to look at the more uncommon ones which by then will be mega rare. BD Mazda 323 GT, N13 Nissan Sunny ZX, Colt GTi etc etc. Who knows, maybe even my Cherry Europe GTi might be worth something one day!

Posted

I reckon any Rover product from 1990 onward will have a following, not a massive one like I can imagine MX5s for example having, but more akin to what, say A35s or Rootes stuff have now. Look at all the BL cars from the seventies which are considered classics now - Toledos, Dollys, Crabs, Allegros etc etc - and the eighties stuff is starting to be appreciated and even restored. The later cars are not bad at all and they are slowly vanishing the same way that those millions and millions of Austin 1100s did.

For the "recapturing lost youth" factor in 10-15 years time you should be stockpiling Saxos, Corsas and the like. I think the real money is in the "(I wished) my dad had one of those" market though. The Subaru Impreza will be king in this market in 25-35 years time. There will be good money to be made in the "lost youth" resurgence, but the wise investor will resist the temptation to sell for a decade or so.

This is just what I was going to say. I suppose the most obvious one as mentioned by you and another above is the Saxo, particularly the VTS. Not looked at the market recently but would imagine that even now they are rare in unmolested examples.106 Rallye's cant get much cheaper either, although again you do see some very high asking prices. The 2 door Subaru Impreza, P1 and 22b (albeit still above £5k)Integra Type R? Focus RS (Mk1), S2 Escort RS Turbos, Fiesta RS Turbos? Tough one. ..So yes, anything either revered or of the recapturing youth' vein.

Yeah, good call Richard. It is one of the reasons I have my Audi after all. :)

Jaguar XJ40, Dissapearing in huge numbers and getting bloody hard to find in original unbodged condition, find a 4.0 with a service history and its bound to increase in value on the back of the "last proper Jag" consensus that seems to be developing since the X type diesel estate stuttered onto the scene.
