Schaefft Posted December 22, 2025 Posted December 22, 2025 Ooh, Oldsmobile 88, it'll be good to see another fwd GM on here! These are finally gaining a bit of a following, after having been everyday beaters for decades people finally realize what they had with them. Since there are millions of them and it's siblings about (at one time) ownership should be smooth sailing. I'm pretty sure that's the one I've sent @Jim Bellas well since he wanted something 3800 powered... About modifications: I don't think it'll be the best base for a lowrider or donk but if you need inspiration, have a look at '91-96 Caprices and Impala SSs. Completely different cars but vaguely similar looks with a huge following that's very much into what you are trying to accomplish. Hopefully I'll get my Riviera on the road in the new year. The Buick 3800 is an obscure engine in Europe but one of the greats for very good reasons! Don't forget that the same engine could be had with a supercharger in the 98 Touring Sedan (which I'd still love to own) and Bonneville SSEi. grizz and Westbay 1 1

MrBig Posted December 23, 2025 Posted December 23, 2025 I always find these opinions interesting. For a start, if it winds other people up, I'm far more likely to do it anywayย ๐ The Americans forget that we didn't get those cars here, what's our equivalent? A Mk2 cavalier? So the Olds is significantly more interesting for us. You're very unlikely to see another while tooling around in sofa-like comfort with a smooth V6 purring away up the front, which to me, always adds to the appeal. Having said all that, the first time I went to the US would have been when these were new, and I remember being blown away by the place, so late 80's and early 90s US metal holds a special place in my heart. Maybe I'm odd, but given the means, I'd be buying a Chevy Cavalier and Buick LeSabre just for the sentimentality! Which way are you going home? Don't forget that the same engine could be had with a supercharger in the 98 Touring Sedan (which I'd still love to own) and Bonneville SSEi. I am certainly not doing traditional lowrider or donk. Neither appealed to me.ย BUTโฆโฆ I am taking inspiration from lowriders for paint and finish.ย ย The paint on this 88 is very much TERRIBLE and for a ยฃ1500.00 car, perfectly acceptable. Itโs also a prime example of GMโs paint quality of the era and after.ย So some paint could be in order.ย ย My plan with the paint may include actually going to and asking paint shops for left over paints. And to create a bit of a multi colour harlequin, using free paints. Obviously, this would not include reagents, hardeners, and labour. Clearcoat would also be for my bill.ย Of course the paint shops most likely would tell me to just ย ะาฝัััาญัั ัะฐ ย You are right about the 3800 of which there are 3 versions.ย The car I am getting is a Series 1 with 170bhp and well respected.ย Series 11 and Series 111 got more power and mods like superchargers in sporty versions.ย ย As you say, a virtually unknown engine here but known to do 300 to 450k miles with just the regular maintenance of a FWD car.ย ย On the car I am getting official fuel consumption is claimed to be up to low 30โs on open roads which is backed up by the sellers experience.ย ย ย MY IDEAL WOULD BE TO USE FACTORY OR AFTERMARKET LOWERED SPRINGS (not cutting) TO REDUCE RIDE HEIGHT BY 2-3 INCHES.ย ย No stupid hard slamming. Just a bit lower for aesthetics.ย ย ย The actual car on the road below.ย eddyramrod 1
