Scimitar knowledge

As part of my late Gt Uncles estate, I've recently had to sell on two vehicles which he used before he died. One was a 1970 Moggy Minor 1000 which sold fairly easily last month after a reletively painless MOT for a vehicle that had been laid up for the best part of 14 months. The other vehicle is a 1984 Reliant Scimitar GTE (SE6B) which he owned from new. I havent had chance to get a look it yet but the Scimitar specilast he used has just put it through an MOT and says it runs very well despite having been laid up for probably 2 years or so. We know it has lots of history and I don't believe the mileage will be that high although I will need to check. Its silver, has the 2.8 Cologne V6 fitted, manual box and that is totally original. The specialist has said that the paint is blisting in places but reckons it is worth between £3-£3.5k in its current condition which seems high to me, restored cars on Car & Classic are advertised for less.I know the SE6B's were galvanised underneath and therefore less prone to rotting away, but I'm not a great expert on Scimitar values. I'll hopefully get it back to my house in the next week or two and get some pictures up.Anybody on here more of a Scimmy expert?

3.5k seems very very high for a Scim.... non runners are practically worthless, scruffy runners a couple of hundred and the best ones seem to top out at about 2k....Late (se6) ones have their following but the early ones are the more expensive I think... If the guy thinks it's a 3.5k motor why doesn't he take it off your hands for that? Actually just thinking about ti if he sells Scims maybe thats the sort of 'dealer price' that he'd charge, rather than a private sale?sorry that probably wasn't helpful at all but yeh, £3500 seems very high indeed...

Whether or not it has pas seems to affect their value somewhat. PALJOY (anag) did an excellent buyers guide entitled Glassfibre Tatty Estates that someone on here may be able to scan.

I'd quite like a Scimitar for some reason, but I'd want a 3.0.

That does seem a high valuation for a car with blistered paint.I would think nearer the two grand mark but then again a one owner manual might bring a premium. That is probably dealer price though not private.I think you are right regards the galvanised chassis and most SE6b's were automatic also by 1984 I think it should've had power steering. There was a buyers guide last year in either PC or Classic cars for sale,I remember reading it but had a clear out a few weeks ago and it went in the green bin

I just missed a recent Classic Car weekly with one in too, I'm 40/60 tempted to keep it as my uncle was very keen on his cars, this being his second Scimitar which he was still driving around well into his 80's but as I'm running a Fiat Coupe and getting married, I know I couldn't do the Coupe or Scimitar justice by trying to run both.

That's over valued by about 75%. Mint SE6 would struggle to make that, and if it needs a total re-paint, you're looking [with all the prep work] at least £4k [ish]. It's worth about £1250, with an MOT.

Against all better judgement, I've made my family and uncle's solicitor an offer of £1500 for it this morning, if I can pay it off to his benefactor in bitesize pieces.

Good for you. Many years ago I ran an SE5a as a weekend toy.First thing to do is make sure the electric cooling fan works. There isn't enough cold air passing through the radiator so the fan needs to be working.Mine had a seperate switch on the dash but I would think by the time the SE6 came out the fan should work off a temp sender.

I'll put some better pictures up this week, I took this one yesterday before driving it back from Gloucestershire.

Its pretty near perfect (unlike what I was told) although there is some bubbling on the bonnet and passenger door, the rest of the shell and interior is in incredible condition. It drives really well, runs at a decent temp and keeps good oil pressure. 4 speed box with working overdrive unit. Its on 117k, has a folder of bills, records and MOT's dating back to 1984 and even retains the original "Will Sparrow" stickers and tax holder.

It seems my great uncle spent a fortune keeping it going over the years with a specialist maintaining it, even had the heads converted to unleaded fuel.

I have to say I was dubious when you said you'd made an offer on the Scim but that really does look like £1500-'orth of car. And then some. Nice one.

For more information try the owners club,

I was thinking of buying one back along, I phoned up the head office, they were very helpful and knowledgeable.

Hope this helps

Colour suits it, nice buy, and quite a late one. Outriggers, front suspension, petrol tanks, electrical silliness are main areas of concern . I presume it's a 2.8 Cologne , if so, usual stuff, timing wheels, and hex oil pump drive

se6b's were not all galvanised chassis's - but a B reg probably is2.8 in a scimitar is gutless compared to the essex engined ones (but with a 2.8 you get a better ratio rear diff to cope with the colognes lack of torque.)1.5K is about right, 3.5 is daydreaming117K miles on a cologne is the death knell, expect to spend money on engine /buy another engine before it reaches 130K milesnice paint - but for how long? - GRP scimitars are renowned for their poor paint, and if the bonnet and door are already bubbling, chances are the rest of the car will follow, and they are very expensive to paint properly, but lashing on thick primer will give a great finish..... for about 6 monthsmy advice: buy a 6a (if you really want an se6) get 12 months MOT, half-decent paint, and pay no more than 1k - 6b's are trouble, parts bin specialsi own several scimitars, and run a 6a as a daily - they are a great 2nd car, but expect to be off the road a while if you break something - some spares are not available new, and others you have to get greased up and bent over graham walker's counter to buy - and GW prices are excessivescimitar forums are useful tool, but dont expect to get cheaper parts by joining one of the owners clubs - most are more expensiveparts cars are usually cheap though - you will need at least one :?

Would agree with most of the above, just priced a set of rear wheel cylinders for an SE5............£78!

Yes, I was inspecting a bit of an old snotter but it looks a lot better than that. I reckon thats £1500 very well spent. :D

I knew it wouldn't be so bad, to us this was a family car and it was owned from new and used for all but 1 year of its 26 years on the road as a regular driver. It has had 0000's spent on it to keep it in good running condition.

seeing a 2nd lot of photos that scimitar does seem exceptionally clean, excellent paint and a desirable black interior in very good ordermaybe the dealer is right - someone will pay 3.5K for this, a professional polish and valet, 6,000 mile service and a long MOT and this may fetch the asking price.
