It's not just British police that try to catch speeding motorists on wide, straight roads in the interest of 'safety'.

This equipment worked by stretching two cables across the road, at a known distance apart, and the instrument would calculate the speed of a vehicle passing over them (I'm guessing that the metal body of the car interfered with a current running through the cables or something like that). The flic on the radio would contact another policeman down the road to actually knick the errant driver.
