hennabm Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 A good friend of mine has had this certain 205 from new and it currently has 480,000 recorded. This is on the original engine and gearbox and one drive shaft. It has had several rear axles as the bearings have worn out and the tinwork has not been replaced although there are areas which have been patched. It will never be surrendered for any stupid scrappage scheme or other. It will continue to live its life still racking up over 8 - 10,00 miles a year. In my opinion a true AS car in every respect.
Timewaster Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Nearly 500k on one original driveshaft?!Awesome work, what does he do? Drive it only in straight lines?I'm impressed.
r.welfare Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Most impressive! What engine is it running? Even the petrol XU/TU lumps seem pretty hardy, I stripped some panels from a 260k 1.8 405 a couple of years ago.Nice to see an early (D-plate) one still going.
meggersdog Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Won't be many good second hand rear axles left soon.Is there a way of removing the arm to replace the bearings? Or does the bearing wear it's housing away ? If not then perhaps just screwing a grease nipple in the endcap and filling with grease might prolong the life of the bearings.Proper autoshite BTW especially with that mileage
hennabm Posted February 27, 2010 Author Posted February 27, 2010 It si an XUd engine. It hasn't had an easy life.It was his own driving instructor car for a few years; then it was door to door as a Pruduential salesman and then it was a shopkeepers car. As you see the jobs of my friend have been varied but the old Pug has taken them all.Regie - this is owned by the same fella as the R14.
MrRegieRitmo Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Regie - this is owned by the same fella as the R14. He obviously likes his Frenchies! He really needs to sign up here!!
HillmanImp Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Won't be many good second hand rear axles left soon.Is there a way of removing the arm to replace the bearings? Or does the bearing wear it's housing away?As far as i know there is a family run business down Coventy way which will refurb them for a very good price. Cant remember their name at the mo.Car looks the nuts though. Decals look ace.
r.welfare Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I want a Peugeot Talbot Sport windscreen strip for my 405!
AnthonyG Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Great cars.I saw four 205s driving from Aberystwyth to Lampeter (about 20 miles in rural Wales) yesterday. They just go on and on, and then on some more!I'd rather have a £400 205 than a £6000 Perodua or Kia any day.
sco14 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Thanks for your kind comments about my faithful old workhorse. The mileage just turned 485,000 today and the original driveshaft has started to knock.
hennabm Posted February 28, 2010 Author Posted February 28, 2010 Welcome aboard SCO14 Regie now has a playmate with his R14.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Ah! I thought it was a GT! or XT or XS or something.
sco14 Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I can undestand you thinking that as it is fitted with XS steel wheels, gti front and rear spoilers, gti style side mouldings which were available from Peugeot way back in 87. How sad was I back then to fit the poor beast with a Peugeot reflective rear panel. All this was done when the car was new to try to disguise it was a diesel, no self respecting 20 something drove a diesel then Originally it had the Peugeot Talbot sunstrip fitted aswell.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 The mileage just turned 485,000 today and the original driveshaft has started to knock. That's disgusting. I feel a warranty claim coming on. I felt as bitter as yourself when the original clutch slave on my old 530i popped after 20 years and 270'000 miles.Cheated, I felt utterly cheated.
trigger Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 I was chuffed that my CV joint on my Passat had lasted 10 years and 110000 miles before it started to knock, 485k is just crazy!
vicsmith Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Not so much autoshite, more a spectacular old car, it looks fantastic on the XS steels with all the stickers and I can imagine with an XUD it`ll be almost as much fun to drive. Hope to see it in the Guiness book of records in a few years.
MrRegieRitmo Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Welcome aboard SCO14 Regie now has a playmate with his R14. Ken, a BIG Autoshite hello & welcome!! We're about to triple the Autoshite R14 population!!!
brammy777 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 That is shite, without a doubt. And welcome sco14!I saw a base model 205 today. And it was 24 years old, funny how they havent really aged badly at all.
Milford Cubicle Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Reading contemporary group/road tests of the 205 1.8D on trigger's page they were rated very highly - even over the petrol equivalent because of the greater driver satisfaction. The one I test drove a while back was very shagged but still had a lot of verve about it, felt like it had a lot more than 60bhp.Running a car bought from new(?) to nearly 500k is getting a lot of value out of it! I wish I could do the same, but I don't like many new cars, and I don't think they'd last that long...
sco14 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Welcome aboard SCO14 Regie now has a playmate with his R14. Ken, a BIG Autoshite hello & welcome!! We're about to triple the Autoshite R14 population!!! What has happened to your 14? Where did you get the front wings from and how much did you have to pay? MK2 14 wings are still available from Renault France, I paid £130 for 2.
MrRegieRitmo Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Welcome aboard SCO14 Regie now has a playmate with his R14. Ken, a BIG Autoshite hello & welcome!! We're about to triple the Autoshite R14 population!!! What has happened to your 14? Where did you get the front wings from and how much did you have to pay? MK2 14 wings are still available from Renault France, I paid £130 for 2.My 14 is in the garage awaiting recommissioning, whatever it needs for an MOT basically, plus tax & insurance. The wings I bought as part of a small stash of R14 parts purchased from a user on here called newoldstock for around £45 per wing I believe back in the summer. He also had some MkII specific wings as well for the same price, I left them as they were obviously no good for my car!Today I'm heading off with Mr Bickle to a place where 2 x R14 are languishing, 1 to drag back home & the other, worse condition 1 to pull apart on site & pillage for parts! I have been looking forward to this day!
