Just had a text to say he’s got the sump off and cleaned the pick up etc. He said it really wasn’t bad at all so not 100% it’ll cure it.. I’m happy that at least it’s been done.

Remind me how many miles It's got under its belt? 

My older petrol Focus takes about 2-3 seconds to build up oil pressure, to the extent it runs with the oil light on for that amount of time. Being the VCT model it makes the cam pulleys rattle intermittently on startup.

It's always done it for the 3 years I've had it and it's never got any worse. Oil light never comes on otherwise, I just put it down to either wear in the engine or perhaps some sludge on the pickup

As long as the oil pickup is clean I wouldn't worry too much as long as it doesn't get worse. Realistically under consumer rights you're protected for 6 months, possibly 12 as you can prove its an inherent defect at time of purchase should it ever get worse

I’d be inclined to replace the turbo feed as well.

Like I say, since he sorted that oil filter issue from servicing, it’s only come on once so potentially actually fine now but as soon  as Amber said it came on, I told her to get in touch with the dealer and just get it back in so it’s sorted. 
 

It’s never come on the actual clocks with the oil warning, just that split second message on the radio screen so I’m not that worried about it… just wanted to get it looked at whilst under warranty.

 

She should be going to collect it after work so will get her to find out if he’s done anything more than just cleaning it all out. At least that’s peace of mind knowing it’s been done… it still runs lovely so I’m not massively concerned.

But the light does come on the dash when the ignition is on and engine off doesn't it?

It comes on and goes off as it should, there’s just this flashes up for half a second.. until it went in the first time it did it every start from cold, now he’s changed whatever it was that was incorrectly fitted in the filter housing during the pre purchase service, it’s done it once

I see, I'd say it's fine for now, just keep a close eye for it getting worse and remember it is inherent if it goes wrong in the next 12 months!

Are you sure it’s not the actual instrument cluster, they are really prone on those.

Can’t be sure but it’s unlikely considering its virtually stopped doing it since the oil filter was sorted 

Picked it up today and he confirmed the pickup wasn’t clogged, said it was actually surprisingly clean. 

He said there’s not much more he can suggest, potentially could be a slightly lazy oil pump from cold but hard to know. 
 

I just thanked him and said we’ll have to see how it goes. I think we’ll just live with it if it does occasionally do it.

He is, he did annoy me a bit today as he said “if it still does it, it may well have to just be something you live with”

I agree to a certain extent, but that’s a decision for us to make ultimately. He has been very good to us so far though.

Just wish he’d fix the air con in the mk6 golf courtesy car we’ve had both times, absolutely roasting today taking it back.

Had this nearly a year now, had a puncture last week so treated it to F1 Autocentres finest £50 budget tyre as we’ve just had a massive vet bill unfortunately.

Ordered a service kit today and gave it a bit of a wash and hoover as it’s been a bit neglected. Amber covers a lot of miles in it, I think it was on about 124k when she got it in July 22, it’s currently sat on just shy of 140k.

Nah no issues! Hasn’t done it for ages. She says it only seemed to do it in the colder weather.

Only reason I asked is because one came to me the other day complaining of the same thing, which made me think of your one. 

I said to them I could whip the sump off and do an oil and filter at the same time but at a couple hundred quid there's no guarantee I would actually find and subsequently rectify anything. They decided to keep an eye on it, a choice I concurred was sensible!

Still got this, did a service at the weekend and found it’s got a fucking massive oil leak. Undertray is one of those carpet type.. it was sagging down its that saturated in oil. Left it off and it’s now leaving patches in minutes of being parked up. Degreased it all as it was so wet I couldn’t see where it was coming from.. either the sump itself or higher. Deffo not sump plug. 
 

Even the exhaust flexi is soaked. 
 

Anyone know if there’s anywhere common these leak from?

If it's on the flexi then I assume it's coming from the front of the engine and running towards the back of the car?

Or does it appear to be coming from the back of the engine? 

If it's coming from the front then it's probably something pressurised rather than a sleeping gasket. So I'd suspect a leak/split in the turbo feed pipe or return pipe if it's loosing that much oil 

Ideally it's going to need to be cleaned as spotless as possible to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from though

I’ll have to try and get under it again at the weekend and clean it all up again and try to pinpoint it, it’s bad enough that I can’t leave it as it’s making a mess everywhere!

It's going to be quite awkward and messy unfortunately! I'd recommend getting a 5 litre tin of brake cleaner and a pump sprayer to get it clean. I expect you could quite easily go through half a tin if all of it. I know it's going to be a pain!

The 400ml aerosols won't be up to the job

You could try jet-washing it off but there's the risk of upsetting things with excess water, and it will be hard to get it dry enough to see clearly where the oil leaks from. Brake cleaner obviously evaporates quite quickly, especially if you get the engine slightly warm beforehand

Good shout, I’ll grab some brake cleaner today. Any suggestions of a cheapish spray bottle suitable for brake cleaner? The only ones I can see advertised as suitable are £20 odd, more than the actual brake cleaner itself 😂

The cheap ones last about ten minutes unfortunately, I've tried them all and they all seize up after a few days.

I've only found the "Wurth" ones at  £30 ish are actually fit for purpose.

Try a place that steam cleans. Save a load of mess on your own drive.

These are cheap enough from Euros and would do the job. Getting access to actually see the effected areas is likely to be the biggest issue. A big spray bottle isn't ideal, at least with this you can direct the straw a bit

If they've pulled the sump to check the pickup could it be the sump seal itself that's the culprit?

That’s what I’m thinking/hoping

Have just picked up a 5l brake cleaner and a Draper spray bottle which says it’s chemical resistant so will give it a go!

Right here’s the state after I changed the oil last week and cleaned it all up, this is fresh oil since then

Right I can’t see any leaks, I’ve cleaned it right up, ran it for ages, there’s nothing high up wet so I can only assume it’s the sump that’s leaking. 
 

Never done one before! Drop the oil, remove sump, clean it all out, check the pickup whilst I’m there, scrape old sealant off, apply new sealant, refit, fill with oil? 
 

Any particular brand sealant I should go for?

I find polyurethane adhesive silicon better than RTV, but this stuff is really easy to apply (its RTV)

The best thing you can do is leave it for as long as possible before refilling with oil, overnight or ideally 24 hours. It's not essential but if you get any overspill it will hopefully cure rather than get washed into the oil and possibly congeal somewhere 

PU like tiger seal does work pretty well but its more like super glue! It cures much harder than RTV.

Edit - and yes, your described procedure sounds about right.
