Cavcraft Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Aye, weren't the DAF LFs based on a Renault? In a moment of madness I nearly bought a new one on the never-never but the contract I was chasing fell by the wayside. It'd have to be a six pot Cummins turbo Daf 45 if I get a 7.5 tonner.
warren t claim Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 As trucks go DAF's are really wanky imho. I hate driving them with a passion!
brammy777 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Hey I still have an I SPY Lorries And Trucks from the early nineties, I got it when I was 5. I can upload some scans if anyone is that interested. Its weird reading it and realising all the Lorries which have disappeared.
warren t claim Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 As an agency driver I get thrown the keys of all makes of truckshite. If I'm unlucky it will be a DAF. If I'm very unlucky it will be a DAF automatic. The job I most look forward to gives me a 1993 Scania 93m with the old fashioned square cab. Worn smooth with about a million km on the clock but it runs beautifully and has a lovely aroma of warm diesel that you just don't get with the modern tackle. A real blast from the past that even needs you to push a plastic mushroom shaped button to stop the engine. It really is the hgv equivalent of a Merc w123 240d. When I eventually get my finger out and start up the skip hire business that I have been threatening to do for some time one of those will be on my shopping list.
chester drawers Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Sliding carpeted roof panels much appreciated on this rather warm day last June
brammy777 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Some good shots there Tayne! The Bedford truck looks like a TK with a KM bumper on it..... Hey I like those T45 cab Leylands, the other month there was a Highways Agency or something like that owned one in Basingstoke and the overhang of the cab was double that of normal. No idea what it was for, but it looked so weird.
trigger Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 You know what, I spend everyday loading containers on and off lorries and i still haven't got a clue about them! I did lift one up about 30ft the other day as his container was still locked on by his twistlock, I lifted it so high i took the front number plate off the bumper and crushed his mud guards. He wasn't happy with me Also so this at work the other week which made me laugh, The woman driving the yellow wagon went stright into the silver truck!. And here's a few that i have seen at shows.
STUNO Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 I think I started something ! The Foden I was in front of was just like the "last one " shown. And today I saw another earlier one working as a logger. Thanks for the information
Inspector Morose Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Sliding carpeted roof panels much appreciated on this rather warm day last June That is just gorgeous. I can just hear it now!
scruff Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 The F88 mentioned is probably this one... It is owned by a bloke called Bob Carmichael from Warwickshire and he goes all over the country hauling timber - I pass it on the A1M near Peterborough and on the A14 quite often. He inherited it from his late boss, it's tweaked to about 320+bhp and goes like stink! Doing my HGV to move our steamers around... sadly haven't got an old wagon for it but my pal runs a 1973 Atkinson Borderer which is sweeeet
brammy777 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Nice one Scruff, thats the one. It was moving at a fast pace indeed in the middle lane, but was on the other side.... otherwise I would have snapped it myself.
warren t claim Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I think he is known as "Bob the Log" somewhat unsurprisingly.
Vin Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 On my commute from Brigg to Leeds I used to see a green F88 on containers. I would regularly spot it on the M180/M18/M62. I knew it was coming up as it would only be doing about 40mph. It looked really scabby as it had a faded green cab. It was a day cab too, which was probably unusual in surviving F88s. It had also had a second axle added between the steering and driving wheels which made it look very 'squat'...Haven't seen it for a few years. Reg no was GAT 918N. Wonder if it ever made it into preservation
fotorabia Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Back in the mid 90s I was doing the Free party Techno festivals..which was supplied by an army of crusty trucks...TKs that died on route..fully restored RLs which always arrived a week late...our mate Steve Bedlam had an ex-Chippendale Circus Volvo [rusty as!]like the one above which i was passenger in on a drive to Prague..and our butch as mate Rachel had fully restored an F88..which also had a massive trailer..
Cavcraft Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Some dude in Wrexham was running a 1978-ish MAN for quite a while and might still be using it.Also a bloke near Oswestry was running an old (1981 I think) Daf 2800 on log work out of Kronospan. He'd driven it from new and bought it off his previous boss. Looked shagged but he swore by the thing!Warren: how does the agency thing work out for you mate, are you getting regular work?

I live out of a holdall.
warren t claim Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 No chance of permanent work I take it?It's not so bad. At least I get steady work. I know a lot of drivers who are signing on.
Cavcraft Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Pm me if you want details of a permanent job not too far from you chief

brammy777 Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 On the subject of older lorries, as Ive mentioned many a time, Stagecoach still rely on there massively old DAF 2800 (or 2500) wrecker for support. Its pretty tatty now, but I think its got a few years yet.A farm round here also uses, or used to, a 1979 ERF C series. Its parked up pretty far into a barn though, so I doubt youll be seeing pictures of that ever. The only other old lorry shite round here is Horseboxes, saw an A reg Cargo the other day.
warren t claim Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 The Ford Cargo was an ace little thing until Iveco got hold of it.
scruff Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 There’s shite loads of old wagons near you Brammy, not in daily use granted but still hard at it when needed. I can think of two Atki Borderers, a Cargo tractor unit, Volvo F10, various ERFs including an A series with a ballast body and a few older Scanias.
bigstraight6 Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Enjoying this thread, some great pics. The Glendinning Quarry/aggregate concern based not far from me in Ashburton South Devon run a fair few of the 'Alpha' cabbed Fodens, not to mention a couple of earlier 4000's. The company has always had a reputation for getting the most out of their lorries and a 'buy British' policy, when I worked in the parts department of the local Leyland/DAF dealer in the late 80's and into the 90's Glendinnings were running many older Leylands, ERF's, Fodens and even some Scammell Routeman tippers, and what a sight and sound they used to make climbing the sloped slip road onto the main A38 road at Ashburton fully loaded with the Leyland 680 engine roaring....Here's the Quarry with a 4000....
blimp Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 The haulier near me has an old Volvo truck which I think may be an F88 - looks very much like it. But it is only a show truck, though seeing it being trailered by one of their newer trucks is nice - always reminds me of a young'un helping an oap to go shopping...
warren t claim Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Does anyone have any pics of the many abandoned HGV's left in farmers fields as advertising?

Id love to see one of them.Theres also a Transcontinental? Ive seen it in Camberley a couple of times.I swear all those lorries used as adverts are cargos.
scruff Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 There's a Transconti in Cranleigh. Could be the same one!
