Poser plate?

I have an old car which has a 6 digit reg, and as there are arseholes out there who will pay good money for it, to hide the age of their gaudy trash, I think I may as well take advantage. Got a quote from a dealer, but they have now pissed me off by constantly ringing, has anyone done this / any dealer recommendations. I suppose it's distasteful of me doing this, but to me a reg is just digits, has no more value than my postcode, unless the reg spelt out something like 'DOGS COCK' I couldn't care less.

I had D700RFC on my 505GTI. It was the car's own number, made even more unfortunate because the car was blue. I got a flier on the windscreen one day saying "OMG M8, UR PL8-$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (I'm paraphrasing). I sent the form in for a valuation and their offer was barely enough to cover the cost of replacing the actual plates- never mind the cost of sorting out insurance, MOT and tax on the new number. Oh, and I wouldn't get the money until somebody actually bought the plate.

Indeed you don't get the money until they've sold it, and this is usually literally years. You can have it put on a retention but unless it's something really really good it's not worth the hassle. Leave it on and when (if) you come to sell the car use it as a bargaining point.

My Audi had S***AFC plates. They weren't worth fuck all either.I had a Range Rover with J924OFC, same script there. Just boggo Bedfordshite plates. I shall await confirmation from The Pog who no doubt knows these things.

I can't make anything out of those numberplates :? I can only assume they have football connotations perhaps...!?

Probably, in this part of the world there are far more WBA plates than the West Bromwich Albion crowd at a home game

1984 aged 18 I owned a Mini on Irish plates. Some chap stopped me and asked if I would sell DIA 8124.He bought the plates for his wife Diana and put them on an '81 Porsche 924.Paid me 200 clams and re-registered my car for me.I was chuffed as not only did I have a free car and change but also it came back on a V.reg.The car was actually a 1970 model but looked like a 4 year old car.Have a look on ebay to gauge prices then if it is worth selling put it on retension and advertise on the bay.

Well, what do you expect?

My boss's son has that on his company car. Everyone is seriously impressed - not!.

Also most number plate dealers would appear to make Osama Bin Laden looks like Mother bleeding Theresa in comparison.I want to know how L14 OV* is being advertised for £2500 by a company yet they reckon L18 OV* is only worth £675 to them.

I find the whole numberplate thing in the UK a bit sad.Back in Australia you can just go and ask for the plate you want without having to make it up with letters and numbers. If you've got a Saab you can have SAAB, if your name is Sally then you can have SALLY. Simple as that, makes the person with S4LLY seem like a bit of a sad twat

A work colleague of mine has a £10000 plate on a £500 car, inverse snobbery at its best.

Me too, cheaper than retention I assume. But even better is an excellent plate, non-transferrable on an 'undesirable' car. The only one I can think of right now is 1AN, which is on a 1960 Morris Minor.

I've regularly seen Ian the moggy in Borehamwood, I assume that's where it lives. So dealers are a no no, I suppose the sort of tossers they must have to deal with instils a rabid hatred of society. Would be nice to fix up the car to the point its value exceeds what the reg may fetch, but it will rust away to nothing before I would find the time. Selling with the car, expecting more cash, makes me like the guys I've often walked away from, will have to think about it.I know someone who had a Mondeo with reg P167WAT, looked like pig twat which, funny enough, is just what the guy is.

There used to be an abattoir truck in Widnes with a "COW" reg plate.

It's not so much that, it's the amount of numbers they have on their books. Their adverts look like a telephone directory, what are the chances of your number being picked out of all those?
