Grew up thinking Sid James was the definitive cockney sparrow.  Recently discovered he was a South African, real name Solomon Joel Cohen and was a hairdresser in Kroonstad (middle of nowhere) until he moved to the UK in his mid 30's.

There's a few people you wouldn't known were South African, like Billy Butlin, JRR Tolkien, Prue Leigh & Elon Musk.

It was a surprise to me that Nelson Mandela was too, especially as he won us the Battle of Waterloo!
