The original Michelin Man, 1894. He is white because rubber tyres are naturally white. It was not until 1912 that carbon was added to the composition, which turned them black. The change was structural, carbon makes tyres more durable, not aesthetic.

However his lungs will be black.

Affectionately known as Monsieur Bibendum , I'm not sure why.
