we were given the crown from the headmaster. The 25pence value probably representing the 25 years silver jubilee. I think they were handed out by the government. The party was held at the school. The gym was cleared for dancing and there was an outside bar for the grown ups.

The 25 pence value was just coincidence. The crown was first issued during the reign of Edward VI, being minted from 1oz of silver.

In 1902 the first commemorative crown was issued for Edward VII coronation. Again these were minted in sterling silver.

Up until 1937 Crown were 50% silver, after that they were Copper/Nickle, just like regular coinage.

From 1990 the face value of a commemorative crown changed to £5.

I remember my nan had one of the 1965 Churchill ones, and I can remember spending half crowns in the late 1960s. They were slightly bigger than a 2 schilling piece.

I remember getting a half crown for a week’s pocket money with a 10 Bob note at the end of the month when my dad got paid.

Sorry to be pedantic but we had Shillings pre decimal. The Austrians had Schillings .

Good to see that you are awake to my deliberate ploy to catch out the grammer police.

By the way, I got 1 'n' 6 for pocket money before 15th February 1971.
