Travelling with a camera: my photo scans from the early 90's

abandon that hope pog! My yella one is going nowhere, unless a) someone nicks it, or B) the worthless bastard pound continues its descent into oblivion and I am forced to sell the museum due to being unable to pay the euro mortgage on it.

Hmmm, I dunno, I'm all in favour of not replacing something till it's totally knackered but when you figure in the running costs of an older car, even if you only spend a couple of hundred a year on welding and other routine stuff on a 35 year old car, that could buy you a 'disposable' car such as the universally unloved Mk5 Scrote. And just throw it away come MoT time.I think to run a 70s car as your daily you need to be a bit of a petrolhead, and appreciate the novelty value somewhat.

Hey Bollox, since I'm a sound guy, I will swap you my Stanza for your Carina for absolutely free! That will help you reduce your "carbon footprint", since it is a newer model.

Posted

Hey that's a GR8 idea Hirst. I am going to buy a load of late 90's CHOD the offer it on swaps to vendors of tasty 70's exotica on the bay with the temptation of it being 'green'. Of course this plan MAY be doomed to failure.

I can see my folks getting that was in a few years... they seem competely oblivious to the fact that their car is now 16 years old and ergo more than double it's projected life expectancy. As long as it keeps rolling, doesn't cost much t fix/MoT every year, it makes sense.

I have to take a bit from column A and column B. The owner of the car mentioned to me that his grown up children constantly pressure him to sell it - bearing in mind he was 70+ and clearly had issues with mobility. His mind was pretty sharp though, but driving something like this in this kind of weather with those kind of nutters on those New forest roads takes a certain amount of balls. His reasoning was that the car goes through the MOT every year and its dead reliable, which means a lot to some people. My Toyota is currently off the road (voluntarily) simply due to my safety and its preservation. Mother Datsuncherry is quite happy to scoot around in a 14 year old Volvo. I'm not sure exactly whether her concerns are enviromental (car scrapping is not exactly the best way for enviromental logic) or whether she just couldn't give a hoot about the motoring fads that have passed her by.

A few seen in the area - surprising how mnay older cars seem to pop up in winter.

Colour coding not nice, but at least they've resisted the temptation to make it into a cosworth. Those are RS Accessory wheels and that body kit might well be too.

Good to see kangeroo killer bars in deepest Hampshire.

Posted Image

Lovely little van, makes more sense than a VW

Posted Image

Something horrible has happened to the side of this chivit - maybe a dog or something but credit to the owner for the seemless resto.

Posted Image

Daily driver in front of a train station.

Posted Image

GTL model. Amazing to see steel rims on a reasonably spec'd car.

Posted Image

Coventry plates + original dealer stickers, pullman spec, 2 tone brown paint and what look like Lotus Sunbeam wheels. Class.

Posted Image

I got busted taking this one - the owner ran out but I assured him I love old japanese tat and wasn't taking snaps of his house.

Kraut import? Seems to me the Europeans used to be much more eager to plump for (dealer-fit) bodykits. DVLA says:

The vehicle details for B890 XOW are:

Date of Liability 01 03 2009

Date of First Registration 01 09 2003

Year of Manufacture 1985

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2300CC

Fuel Type Heavy Oil

The E3 BMW was so much better than the heap of shit E23 7 Series that followed it. They look pretty and aggressive at the same time. That looks like it could be an injected 3.0Si, 200 bhp and 130+. Proper car.

105 Alfas can look a bit wank, but the Junior with two headlamps and steels with dog dish hubcaps looks fine. That's a very pretty car from when Alfa made proper cars, not the shit they make now.

A few casuals spots around the area.

Posted Image

Another unmolested fastback.

Posted Image

Yet another Y reg Cortina, decent spec by the looks of it.

Posted Image

Seeing less and less Saloons these days, phase 2 estates seem to be reasonably common. I don't recall seeing any C reg 21's, but I have seen a few D reg 18's in the past.

Must have been a citroen mini-meet in the pub across the road. There was a 2CV6 Bamboo too.

Technically not my spot, as a RR forum member sniffed it out, but too close to me to ignore. Remarkably good condition which suggests it was a dealer car. The dealer is now closed down so anything could happen to this car.

I honestly can't remember when I last saw a Renner 15, but it's ceratainly decades rather that simply years ago! Wonderful. Didn't really appreciate what good-looking cars they were at the time.

Oh My! Of course you left a note? Where was this hunny?

A Crystal green GL, but it's got a Ghia look to it with the Loys. They were such a handsome beast and quite pokey.

About a mile away from where I'm currently living in Southampton. I can quite easily leave your details on the screen if you fancy a little bit of Horizon action.

A bit of a bumper crop here, seen in the last couple of weeks.

Great to see one of these again. looks like its not far from being driven again.

I think I've seen more 305 vans than saloons.

Very clean example.

The light was fading and I was hungry so I decided not to investigate the filler cap sticking out of the grill. Its either going to be for tea or piss. Parking nudge bar at the front is an inspired mod too.

Never imported into the UK, I suspect its been imported here via Europe as opposed to a US Servicemans car.

Parked next to this Rover 820.

These were only ever done in orange, so the pink effect must be some bizarre fade effect or an ill advised repaint.

Very neat van to hack around in.

Cov registered Sunbeam.

Not shite, but a bizarre collaboration between Pininfarina and Rolls Royce. Thankfully its mercifully rare. The Fiat 130 coupe is a much more successful design, which was done by the same stylist at the same time.

Nice to see winter tyres on this - do people still indulge in rubber swapping?

All 4 of these seen together. I used my spidy skills to deduce that they all belong to the same owner.

Driven by 2 old ladies, holding up the traffic prior to stopping at Tescos to buy 'Bella' and some cat nip.

I imagine the coupe is rarer than the saloon. MG next to it defiantly ignored.

I don't know if this is a real intergrale - seems a bit early to me. Might just be a HF Turbo.

Nice to see one that isn't red.

Looks like the shite numbers are recovering from the mass scrapage!

Fantastic spottage! Some unusual stuff there which I'm surprised to still see out and about.

I'll wager that metalwork under the front of the Alto is for attaching it to the back of a motorhome and the thing on the grille is a socket for hooking the lights up.

That would make far more sense than my idiotic suggestions. I've seen the car pottering around New Milton, hopefully I'll get a chance to inspect it properly.

Blimey DC, quite a haul there. Weird chromework rusting on the Jag, yet the paint is shiny-looking.E-reg must be super-late on that CF?

Posted

That eclipse is an odd looking thing. At first glance the roof looks like that of a Nissan 200SX.

Posted

Wow. Alto & Alfa for me plz... although the cable hanging from under the GTV makes me think the Alto's a safer bet?

I was just thinking that - nice to see how many have escaped the krusher during last year's peak metals prices, though you must have travelled a fair overall distance to clock all that lot!The supermarket with the Fords wasn't Poole perchance? The Escort is especially glorious with its original dealer plates and lack of stonechip covering the bottom 6 inches of the body, long may it continue to escape the inevitable so as future shiters can behold its beige mid-spec loveliness.

I don't know what to say - what an amazing haul  There really is next to naff all in my neck of the woods, I don't know how you do it.

Ditto!! I'm amazed!

Those are top level spots alright. I thought the CF died out on about a B-reg certainly the Midi had been going a while by the time E-reg came along. That escortis a great find! If I had one of those i'd never lave it in a supermarket car park, in fact i'd never go anywhere in it at all due to paranoia.

Top level spottage, don't think I've ever seen a Camargue outside of a show or dealers. Amazing that the Subaru pick up is pure mid 70s design and yet is on a 1990 plate!Adore the shiteyness of the Alto, and the rarity of a pink Bond Bug, and the Herald Coupe is very rare indeed, on the A-plate. When I was a kid I used to be amazed at seeing an original A-plate car, such was their rarity in the late 70s/early 80s, but I seem to see more now than I did back then?
