Can anyone weld my Saab? (was: Sorry...)

Hi all,

 

Seems my situation with the Saab has caused a bit of a ruck in here. For that I apologise - I like Autoshite and all it stands for, and anyone who knows me will understand that my taste in cars chimes perfectly with this place.

 

I vented off here, as I was at my wits end with everything, knowing that it would lead in a resolution to a situation that had been dragging on far too long. And on that, it pretty much has. I now know where the car is, and will collect it as soon as possible.

 

Anyway, apologies for dragging Autoshite into this situation more than I needed to - I have also apologised on MacDroitwich, too - but I hope you understand why.

 

Thanks to Kyle I know where the car is - he photographed it yesterday for me...

Glad you and Kyle got it sorted out Keith. I'm surprised you haven't landed on here before now given your fondness for 70's BL bilge. Welcome aboard.Whats the plans for the Saab once you get it back? will you be putting it back on the road?

TBH Keith I think the Saab / Kyle situation was hijacked by a troll to come on here and cause trouble. As far as I'm concerned you and Kyle had sorted it and everything was left at that. Certainly wouldn't blame you for what went on. It might have been the catalyst but obviously not your doing. So back to business as normal now please!!

Okay then :)First question - anyone in the East Midlands fancy welding up that scuttle panel? I have kinda perked up the past couple of days - my SD1's coming home in a few days all sorted (thanks to the good guys at MOTest Farnham), and I have acquired an LPG kit for it, which should make it a lot less painful to run as my daily.But yes - that Saab. I want to get it back and have it on the road again. But the killer for me is that welding. If I can get that done, and not *too* painfully financially, then it's a goer for getting back on the road...What say you guys?RegardsKeith

I reckon the only way to repair that properly will be to cut the same section out of a written off car. Might well need the dash out though which I dare say wouldn't be a fun job. :(

Keith - Craig and myself use a tame welder over our way. Can pass on details, though he's not the quickest (he's had our CF since November but when you've only got a tiny workshop that the bus won't fit into, you can see why he hasn't touched it recently!)

I agree... I'd definately try to chop a bit out of another car to repair that. That sort of thing is an utter arseache to fabricate. I do reckon it could be done with the dash in but you would need to slide something down the gap to protect it from the heat of welding.

I've had a few cars with the same thing. I've ignored it, wire brushed it, treated it and sprayed over, and then put the windscreen over it. PITA to fix. It'll cost loads and you'll have to take everything out. Do it my way and it'll be fine. :)

Actually, to be honest I repaired the screen surround on my old Datsun lowrider with P40 and it was much, much worse than your Saab. That was over ten years ago and to my knowledge it only started bubbling back through about 2 years ago. Considering the hammering that bodyshell too (full hydraulics) it's amazing it lasted that long! I couldn't bring myself to repair rust with GRP these days though.

They're probably only a few hundred miles from each other. Mine's 60 east of Prague. I take it your dude is in Poland.

I know of an utter authority on 9000 Carlsson and Aeros.I also know of an excellent welder. But he lives in St Helens.

ive fitted screens ( im a windscreen fitter ) in far worse than that just get your windscreen guy to fill the holes up with windscreen glue , once the screen is back in and the scuttle on you will never know .

^ I think the idea is not to have soaking wet carpets and a floor Fred Flintstone could shove his feet through. Assuming it’s still a keeper. Otherwise I can see your point!

them holes are tiny compared to the ones ive filled in the past but yes i would fill them then ebay it lol

On a car like this I understand the desire to 'do it right'.Since it's a 9000 Aero, presumably well treated before it went on its walkabout, it deserves better than hiding the rust. That is, if it's not the worst most expensive job in the world.

I'm sure you will because you're not a mong - but check the whole windscreen surround and sort it all out while it's in this state. My boss had a 9000 that is now part of the company fleet. I dont know if in the past the surround has been scratched or anything (like when a screen is removed), but on the off-side A-pillar, but next to the screen, there is a big area of rust/corrosion. I reckon it's gone in this area because when it's raining and the wipers are on, the wiper sweeps all the water into this spot.I really hope the Saab gets sorted, I am a big 9000 fan and do hope to own an Aero somepoint in the future - providing they've not all done moon mileage!Cheers, Greg.ETA.
