Lovely cars, aren't they? I don't want to know what mine looks like underneath... judging by the holes in the floor it won't be pretty.

Well, since it was last done, most of the replacement panels have become available in galvanised form, so hopefully next time around things will last longer...

Mrs Trigger is struggling to drive the Mk3, if things don't improve soon there might be a change of plan on the cards :?

Steady on man. She seems a nice enough girl, shame to divorce her just for that reason :D

Thanks for the LOLs Mr Lobster.

Michiel, I had heard about galvanised 2CVs - how on earth to they avoid distorting the paper-thin panels? They must need a pretty good primer as well...

 I'll have to trade the wife in for a model that can drive old cars!.

She's told me tonight that she's getting on better with it today and that she's had a few people wave and give her the thumbs up in it on the way home from work this evening so fingers crossed I might let her stay.

2CV has gone in for welding. Scary just how rotten it has got. This is phase one - new arse. Somewhere between now and the next MOT, I'll need to replace the front quarter floors as well. What worries me is that the lower bulkhead area is probably rotten again as well, which means body-off-the-chassis. Again.

Was the 2CV subject to rebuild? If so bit suprised it's gone that rotten. The floors and bulkhead ok on mine, someone gave it a good dose of rust proofing in the past, it's just end of the sills thats gone a bit rotten - fixed with repair sections, now to grease the kingpins (yuk).

Trigg, I can't remember for sure, but those Escorts have cable operated clutches, don't they?

If so, would it be possible to put something like a hard-ish rubber spacer at the end of the cable? It squashes to soften the bite point a bit. It works well for R8 Rovers, there's a thread by "ashy" somewhere ont' interweb. I can't find it now...

Thanks Joe, I'll have a look, I don't think it's that bad, 1st is a little high/sharp but the rest are good, I'm used to cars like that but my wife isn't so much, She'll get the hang of it!, Personally I think the clutch is nicer then that of my ST!.

Yes. It was rebuilt in 2002/3 and given a thorough makeover in 2005/6. The Mini's bubbling up in places too though - I'm starting to think that restoring a car just can't match how well protected the cars were when new. 2CV's already had bonnet hinge and sills replaced. They rotted from the inside out, presumably because it's very hard to paint the insides without dipping the bodyshell in a big vat of anti-corrosion stuff. (Have tried getting anti corrosion wax into these areas more effectively this time, so hopefully they'll last a bit longer...)

Worth pointing out that the 2CV tends to live outside all year round, gets driven through the winter and does a bit of off-roading too...

Has anyone on here ever redyed a faded rear parcel shelf?, Mine is a mix of brown and purple!

Is there a way of repainting them at all?, I not sure what colour it should even be even!, I'm guess a nice grey or black would look better though, Ideas on a postcard please!

In the words of legendary Mike Brewer “Give it an aerosol in black (or whatever colour, cream probably) and no one will be any the wiserâ€Â...

I was looking to by myself an old Lotus so obviously tonight I bought a not that old 7 seater Merc 124 E280 Estate.

It's a pretty tidy old bus inside and out with 117k on it. It needs a bit of paint and a back box then I'll be selling it. Not before I spend a bit of qual' time carrying stuff around in it though.

Looks pretty decent that Cort, does it have leather or MB Tex interior?

Posted

It's a cloth interior. It's tidy though, no wet dog stains or lolly's stuck to it although there is a split in the drivers seat, which is a shame.

Have you seen the 3rd row of seats in these? The only benefit I can see of sitting in them is you'll see what's about to hit you as stare out the back window.

Posted

Yeah, they fold up from out of the floor iirc. My kids loved sitting in the rear seats but they (seats) are small and as you say not to safe by the looks of things.

Posted

I used to drive one of those quite often, top spec job with all the toys.

Many's the time I've ended up driving six drunkards home from the pub in it. The third row of seats is ace.

Do these have the rear spheres? My 1992-ish 230 estate did and I believe they're horrificably expensive if they throw their hand in. Mine was actually nasty to drive as the spheres were knack'd and it had been lowered.

Only the ones with the self-levelling. My old W123 280TE did, but I've seen 'em without it.

You could recover it with some suitably coloured cloth from a trim shop, or failing that grey acoustic cloth from an ICE store.

I do believe the real bodgers way to do it is to use a tin of matt black spray paint purchased from your local pound shop/discount XSMAX catalogue store.

Yep, resprayed my MK4 parcel shelf with a matt grey from Ye Cheapo Shoppe, and gently gave it a going over with an old clothes brush after it was dry. I left it out of the car for a week, though, until the smell died down a bit. Negative rear speaker situation for that week, but it beat being gassed.

Presumably thanks to doing something wonderful in a former life, I've been offered a 1961 Triumph Herald. :D

It's in Boston (lincs) and I'm in Sheffield. I *might* drive but it's not taxed and tested, so really I need to get someone to trailer it home for me.

Now, it's a good ten years or so since I had to get a bust vehicle across the country. Any suggestions as to where to ask/look/start?

/noob

EDIT: My daughter fucking loved the dicky seats in the back of my 124. Every time she gets an inkling I might be getting a new car she says "can you get a big car with those seat in the boot again?". Bless. Ms_tone and I also had a lovely rainy camping weekend where we spent the vast ,majority of the time sat in them with books and wine. She was fine, my head didn't quite fit under the roof.

Now I want to keep it.

The number one way to transport shite is via shitely http://www.shiply.com/shipley.php?gclid ... 4Qod8XNBtw

MrB0llox produced a top tip for shitely the other day. Get quotes, then look at the person who's quoting's history and try to suss out their REAL non shipley business name and give them a ring and negotiate outside of shipley so they avoid the fee's and you get a cheaper price.

Searching database for Escort parcel shelf anecdote:

Years ago, a MK4 Escort and a MK5 Cortina had a head on collision outside my house. While the Cortina was taken away the same day, the severely damaged Escort was dragged onto the pavement and left for a week, during which two or three different people knocked on our door and asked if they could have/buy the parcel shelf. No interest in any other parts.

Awesome, ta very much. :D

My good memories of that weekend are slightly coloured by the wine. I do remember before I got completely pissed have a fairly long-winded winge about the damage sitting in there was doing to my back and neck, and that we should just "leave the fucking tent and go home now while I can still move my legs".
