real nasty out there

I wouldn't have made it out at all today, it took 1 solid hour to get onto the main road, at which point I turned back as acceleration from a stand still had the car spinning round on the spot.

It's horrible and would advise anyone thinking of going out, to keep it til 24 hours.

I had quite a nice day, considering I do work outside most of the time. Walk to work at 6.30, manage to stay inside working and monging about until 8.30. Set off for site about 25 miles away expecting to get there around 9.30.. instead we get stuck in queues so Im a nice warm passenger (getting paid) for an extra 2 hours and get on site around 11.30. ..On site, and do 3 hours work, again more-a-less undercover and then come home. Admittedly quicker on the way back but overall managed a 9 hour day with 3-4 hours work. My days are usually longer than this, but in this weather 9 hours will do fine..

It's not just Brits who can't drive on the slippery stuff though -

shows some Dutch drivers having fun in the snow & ice. :?

A couple of inches in the past hour and a bit. Well, looks like tomorrow will be fun...........

Posted

In addition to what Ive just said, the road next to where I live (a main road) has not been gritted all day yet its been below zero and we have had snow since before 6. Had one snowplough but even that failed to breach it.

We have about 1- 2 inches of snow here and still falling. I have had no problems in my modern getting anywhere, the all season tyres help a lot, ABS is annoying but ESP and traction can be switched off. At work today ( I am a postman) 8.5 mile delivery walk, just under 600 houses in 3.5 hrs no problems at all a little slippery and best of all the local chavs and scrotes stayed in bonus! It makes me laugh watching people trying to drive in the snow, 1st gear and floor it  .

Posted

oops, thought i was getting off lightly with this one but it's just started barrelling down.....must be nearly an inch already after aprox. 20 minutes. great....

Well...

We made the mistake of going to the cinema tonight in Camberley... When we got out afterwards, it had obv been snowing heavily for a while, 1 - 2 inches of fresh snow and I don't think there was any grit around. Cue a very slow nervous journey in my girlfriend's Honda Jazz CVT auto, slippy slidy. I soon found the best tactic was to put the gearbox in "sport" mode because L was too jerky, and apply the brakes v gently down slopes. Eventually got back to gf's work carpark to pick up my car, which was wearing a blanket by then....

Still it started 1st time, and I gingerly followed Lucy back from Knaphill to Old Woking, avoiding any hills and doing about 10-15 mph in 2nd/3rd. The Citroen GSA proved to be GR8 in snow, just as I'd been told many times. 145R15 tyres = WIN. It really helps that the clutch is VERY progressive. I was really proud of the old girl!

Saw a few incidents on the way, including a FWD car that must have hit something badly with its rear wheels... it pulled out onto a roundabout from my right, front wheels spinning wildly, rear wheels not turning at all - with cracked trims and the rims looked damaged. (then pulled into a sideroad)

I managed to reverse it into the driveway without issues.

Phewww! A 13 mile journey (with stop to collect my car) ... 1h 15m.

How's anyone else getting/got on with the "TRAVEL CHAOS" in their area tonight?

Posted

No TRAVEL CHAOS here, just a light dusting. Nothing to hinder progress significantly. That said,I was going to get the BMW MoT'd this week, but I might just wait until spring (I have done 191 miles on the last 6 months tax disc which is up at the end of the month, arseflakes!)

Posted

4-5 inches here, chaos was limited to just driving slowly as I didn't leave for work till 1.15pm (about 15 minutes early) but journey took about 5 minutes more.A few idiot drivers but forward planning led to no incidents.... like stopping to let a young lass in a clio slide in front of me onto the main road.

Absolute chaos, OMG how will we ever cope, we better get some supplies in as its the end of the world.......we've had an inch overnight and everything is at a standstill. Just watched some twat try and get up the hill out of our estate, a gentle slope you would think he would have just eased it up gently......no.....fucking tit decided to launch himself at said hill with much gusto and lots of spinning of wheels....he dissapeared out of view, I live down the bottom, Engine revs right up.....down he comes.... clunk into the curb....One of my neighbours who drives a manky Mk5 Escort tootles off nearly on tick over and cruises past matey, piece of piss..... :)

I'm disappointed. I opened the curtains this morning expecting to see Armageddon, planes falling out of the sky, packs of wolves tearing schoolchildren limb from limb, that kind of thing. Nothing. Even the pavements have been gritted now, so I didn't even fall on my arse walking into work. In fact it was actually raining a minute ago, although it's now almost sunny.

Another inch overnight, so what better day to try and drive a 17t truck up the (residential, quite narrow, ungritted) street?I've sat here for 15 minutes already listening to him thrash the tits off it.Yesterday saw our delivery for work get stuck on the access road, just at shift swapover time. 80 cars trying to arrive/leave, and an artic with 40ft trailer slap bang in the middle. I'm glad I got there so early! Kudos for the boss going out with a shovel to dig it out though.

Well we have had about another 10" of snow last night....more where it drifted, its over 2' deep now minimum, nothing has come past the house today.....gonna have to do a 3 mile round trip walk to my elderly next door neighbours to top up their logs and coal etc, I doubt I'll get the P100 today  Forecast is for more heavy snow tonight and for this "freeze" to continue for a fortnight....its boring me now

Posted

A few pics of the snow this morning...remember there is about 18" frozen below todays fall

Very nice (seen from a warm and dry office that is...)!

It is actually snowing quite hard here now, but it looks from the satellite pictures like we've just caught the tail end of a band of snow so it won't last very long - just long enough to make everything nice and slippery again.

Tax out 31/12/2009 as well, failed on rear seat belt mountings, to fix, rear floor needs to be replaced, along with repair to cross member, 1 wiper blade and new windscreen, an advisory on prop shaft uj shot and 1 rear axel mounting bush, if you have nothing else to do maybe you could come down and do the work for me LOL

Here in the sunny Channel Islands, three flakes of snow signal the start of absolute sodding chaos. Thin blond women crawling everywhere at 2 mph in exotic four wheel drives, old giiffers with snow chains on the back wheels of thier rancid old Fiestas [yes, really] twats in Beemers trying to be macho and then ignominiously sliding into the back of a dustcart [how we laughed]At the moment we 've had a few flurries, I'm hoping it comes down in lorry loads, could do with a laugh

Posted

Do the old giffers think their Fiestas are RWD? I just saw a piece on the BBC news, a roving helicopter and a reporter going on about "impassable" roads. The main roads looked very passable to me - black, in fact, with no snow on them.

Snowing quite heavily here now in eastern NI.I went to my local Arkwright for smokes and the only cars making any progress that I saw were a convertible Rover 200 wedge and a mark 1 Avensis minicab.

Protect and Snowvive

Snow is the biggest threat known to mankind to date. It is cold and slippery and it means there'll be loads of sodding kids out. The main thing to do is STAY INSIDE. Your house is probably warm and won't be full of 8 year olds chucking snowballs around.

Posted Image

You may find it boring being stuck in the house. If your missus is out, try building a hideout inside the living room, using your furniture and doors. It will be nice and cosy inside.

Posted Image

Since you've used the cupboard doors to build your hideout, use this as an opportunity to chuck out all the nasty food you weren't going to ever have. Take anything worthwhile (Fray Bentos pies, bottles of pop) into your hideout.

Posted Image

Since the television will only be showing travel news or "The Wright Stuff", put the radio on. LISTEN TO THE RADIO. They might be playing Bill Withers or something. Have a bit of a nap. Stay in your hideout until you estimate it to be July or you run out of booze. You might realise how little everyone misses you at this point, ah well!

OMG TEH WORST WEATHER ON RECORD SINCE RECORDS BEGAN, (since three years ago).

PS Listen to 1107 TALKSPORT and slowly realise people LIKE THAT actually exist in the world, and are allowed their own radio stations.

My boss just called me, from his snow-bound home in Surrey, informing me that it's too snowy to carry on with my duties and has told me not to take any risks with the vehicle. Ironically he informed me that he ordered 2 4x4 Land Rovers before Christmas, but they won't arrive until February, by which time I suspect the snow will all have gone..... Management, eh?

Well I am back from my hike...very pleasent it was on the way there :) first 1/4 was unmitigated hard work walking throgh 2' of snow, after that the local farmer had clearead a lot of the loose snow so it was an easy walk.on the way back however the skies fell once more and we have had about another 4" in the last hour, great for keeping fit...our lass aint so impressed its passed knee deep and is up to chuff deep now

Posted

We had a couple of inches of snow yesterday......the locals had stripped the shop bare.......there were big bits of the planet breaking off....I had to wade through a sea of corpses......

Posted Image

Took the sproglets out in the snow to show them the joy of a tin tray on snow, was all going well until I said "Watch me kids....!" whilst gingerly trying to get on said tin tray.....am now slightly bruised, and hate tin trays....I never even got on it, went down like a sack of spuds.....
