Is there a seagull caught up in it somewhere? Common problem with these.

Somethings making a noise there 🤔

the vacuum pump drives on the those can make a noise like that and make you think your chain tensioner is done for.  If you pull the pipe off the pump at idle and the nosie disappears its the pump drive

So.

Loads of connectors into this. Fortunately they all appear to be different so should be able to fit them all back in correctly.

2x 10mm nuts holding it to the body, not tricky to take out.

And out.

The back. Note the design with a second circuit board, obscuring any view of the soldered joints holding the fuel pump relay to the larger board.

And these pins have the dual purpose of holding the boards fixed at the desired distance from each other, while being part of their own electrical circuits. This will all have to be de-soldered to get a proper look at the relay!

I don’t know whether the relay itself is likely to be on the fritz rather than failing joints holding it on the board.

I think we’ll have a go at repair then. I’ve gone with this, can always offer the spare one up if this is successful.

Best of luck - I admire anyone who fiddles with electrism; being colourblind means I tend to leave that stuff alone.

Also, whenever I've tried soldering it goes to shite - tinning beforehand or whatever, there's normally more solder on the floor or wrong bit of wire!

We possibly have a smoking gun:

Mate has soldered in a replacement relay and is tackling the job of fixing the two circuit boards back to each other.

Liked for your bravery. This kind of stuff gives me the fear.

Me too. But I suppose if it's bolloxed anyhow it's got to be worth a try

Certainly was.

Glad you got it fixed.

Personally, as we are coming into summer, I would now get it punted off ASAP. Never has a car stressed me out more than an R56.

I'll see you and raise you an R50 - most ungrateful b'stad car we've had in years - probably ever had tbh.
(Our R55 is OK in my book and it's too early to know about Sproglette's R56)
When they work and go they're great. They just never seem to gracefully peter out - proper little binary cars

Actually, I’m getting some enjoyment from dealing with this cars issues as they come up and trying to implement repairs in a cost effective manner. I guess there’s an element of better the devil you know, it has been given a couple of treats…

Genuine BMW-supplied R57 velour floor mats. These are in mint barely-used condition and have replaced some which were salvaged from a scrap R56 (eventually scrubbing up ok but the rear ones being tired and too large for the convertible footwells). A lucky local find.

Seats, these are somewhat careworn, I had been hoping decent replacements would eventually come up nearby but a set of very nice R57-specific covers was advertised so I went to check them out and agreed to buy. Rears went on this afternoon:

I think they look great.

I’ll get round to the front ones another day.

After brunch the sun reappeared for a while so decided to finish the seat cover install:

Celebrated the recent successes with a quick wash.

While I'd normally agree, I believe mk2_craig lives in Jersey. 40mph limits (albeit not that well kept to) and a place that is 9 miles wide, 5 miles long. So a broken down car is only a short bicycle ride back home again 😄

If you mosey on over to the Shite for sale section you will see that this is now up for grabs, should you fancy a well sorted R57 Cooper S convertible.

We have continued making improvements as required:

Finally replaced the cracked A pillar cover with one carefully lifted off a car before the scrap truck dragged it away.

and replaced this sidelamp bulb.

EDIT 30 Sept - sold and now with its new owner!  Thanks for watching.
