Shite League Tables

With the advent of the user rankings, could we maybe set up a league table of shite? I am quite happy to tabulate a handy Excel spreadsheet with specific sections highlighted in periwinkle blue.

Or we could have it a bit like the old GBU in CAR, before CAR turned into a cess pit lifestyle mag.

Here we'd use the Index to gauge a car's worth in an Autoshite context.

I reckon the top must be the Talbot Tagora, with the Chrysler 180 in hot pursuit. Actually, it probably speared off at the last roundabout.

So the Tagora and 180 are in the Premier League. Feel free to edit and change so we have a definite hierarchy of chod. I've put some suggestions in myself and added my crap to the pile.

PREMIER LEAGUE (GBU Index : 'Interesting')

1. Talbot Tagora D

2. Chrysler 180

3. Daihatsu Charmant

4. Lancia Gamma Berlina

5. Isuzu Florian

6. Isuzu 117

DIVISION 1 (GBU Index : 'Adequate')

1. Mitsubishi Celeste GSR

2. Citroen C15

3. Isuzu Piazza Turbo

DIVISION 2 AKA THE VAUXHALL CORSA CONFERENCE (GBU Index 'Boring')

1. Volvo Amazon

etc.

Just to add my own tat to the list.....

I'd like to see a Sao Penza in there somewhere. And a Tredia. Don't forget a Lonsdale. A Renault 7 as well. Alfas Arna, Six and 90. 128 3P and that Seat 1430 too. Leganza? A diesel Dedra estate might qualify. Suzuki X90, Kia Pride and Mercedes Vaneo, Chrylser Neon and FSO Polonez or Caro etc. We'll need a Vauxhall Conference soon...

I reckon an amazon is a bit too good to be classed as shite, it's a bona fide classic ya'know.Austin 3-litre has gotta be premier-league shite?

Posted

Talbot Matra Rancho has got to be high on the list as well as the Austin Princess/Ambassador.

I'd put the Alfa Arna/Nissan Cherry Europe right up in the premier league, not because it's a bad car as such (it isn't really) but because it was such a fiasco as far as marketing and sales. Even the idea was a pretty ill thought out one. The Cherry Europe version pips the Alfa version to top honours by being a hastily lashed up re-badge and by selling in such small numbers (only 6832 in total).I think the Cityrover must qualify as ultra shite too alongside the Streetwise.

Yeah I would agree the above, I think a lot of (maybe most) quality shite cars are things which aren't bad cars in themselves.Take the Chrysler 180, I've read some pretty favourable early road tests of it. However, the makers seemed to do a pretty good job of sealing its fate - little marketing, no plans to update it and just a load of general bad decision-making (like spending a fortune developing a V6 and then deciding not to bother with one). It's still a handsome motor and in the very early 70s it will have seemed like a really modern and smart car I reckon - it should have done a lot better.

FSO Polonez / Caro need to be in the premier league surely? Alongside the Yugo Sana

Is this the grey one that's almost a carbon copy of mine save for the Perkins Prima, some decent bumpers and no sunroof? The one that's featured in a classic mag this month?Amazons aren't shite, but by sheer dint that they're a 'bona fide classic' and common in AS terms they're a bit boring.Mine was mega AS material before it was restored though. Now it looks okay, it's not so AS. Doesn't stop me from loving mine though.

Incidently - GBU is back in CAR now. Its not quite the same, but a move in the right direction.Right, Back on topic.....

I do believe there is one that has been omitted so far...Imagine a car....Largely forgotten by virtually everyone....Unloved when new....And sold in the UK for only 9 months over twenty five years ago....Behold....The Dacia Denem. Premier league surely?

Posted

The Dacia Denem.

The 'Very Acceptable' Dacia Denem :D I'm surprised that the 'Grey-Grille' Ford Sierra hasnt been mentioned so far. Its super shite because of its extreme austerity yet almost nobody has ever see one one outside of the brochure. It is almost infinitely less civilised than the next-rung-up 'L' trim level and you would have to have been a real miserly bastard to have bought one new. I would love love to own one. Real 'motoring wilderness' I think. Are we talking cars that sere sold in the UK. If not, I vote that models like the ZAZ Tavria (sp) or the Moskivich Aleko. Obscure, always fooked looking even when new but, according to the reviews in my Soviet car book, pretty good at the job they were designed to do.

We haven't had the Lancia Trevi yet have we? What about more exotic shite - Panther Solo anyone?

Posted

I forgot about the panther solo! I recall having a car book once upon a time which was all about these dream cars, and it had both a solo and a whizzkid in it, along with a 3500 SD1 Vittesse.Top book. The solo would be top drawer shite, i have never seen one. Has anyone seen one for that matter?I think commericals should be involved too, if anyone sees a Freight Rover with a sliding front door(stress the freight rover part, not earlier Leyland or later Leyland Daf/LDV), a Leyland EA or anything in roadline colours, that is also top grade shite.

The panther rio has had me thinking............

SVX's are ok. There's one outside the garage my Escort is at.

Is a LHD SVX more shite?

My nomination for Autoshite Gold would probably be a Peugeot 505 GLD Familiale in beige. Like this;
