many years back, I owned this one (bloody hell, must have been a long time ago, it's got a tax disc !)

IMG_2325.jpeg.cab1c0b20b9a442139405783093d6606.jpeg

and always thought it really suited those wheels

so was on the look out for a set to go on bluey

these turned up on marketplace, described as tatty and in need of a refurb and new tyres

£50 later...

IMG_2427.jpeg.cec5a518a3894eda2596e95395745f0b.jpeg

yep, those tyres are borked, but lets give them a quick clean up and see what we have got

IMG_2429.jpeg.6aff6e5994b77be491e5e1f5e4632538.jpeg

not too bad at all

IMG_2430.jpeg.022cc765aa9a419620ff82a005d757dd.jpeg

I'll probably get them done anyway, this whole having a nice car worth looking after is a bit alien to me :)

current wheels that I'm just not keen on

IMG_2483.jpeg.e7721e795e0938173cbb111db3b4f653.jpeg

new* wheels

IMG_2482.jpeg.f065ac8d72bf22347a9b18e82bf1c61f.jpeg

but while I get the new ones sorted and try to sell the old ones, it needs something to run around on.

IMG_2493.jpeg.37c1041ad00763b339947d2c38bca7df.jpeg

nicked them off the Exo :)

I'm not sure - maybe it's the silver hardtop that makes them look odd but it's only temporary anyway

those enkei 5 spokes were smart but not quite smart enough, so I bundled them and a set of new tyres in the back of the 'onda and dropped them off at https://stellablast.co.uk/alloy-wheel-refurbishment/

IMG_2867.jpeg.cfb777130f93196c28857d57ef2160f3.jpeg

a few days later.....

IMG_2986.jpeg.a95779f0277e7b4a034e7d03d05c410d.jpeg

how good do they look now ?

IMG_2992.jpeg.cc1defcaee973ba700441d92699a686c.jpeg

I'll order a set of silver wheel nuts, the black ones look a bit odd, but otherwise, I'm very pleased :)

That looks so much better. What a great looking car it is, especially in that colour. It's so rare to see a clean unmolested MX5 that it's easy to forget their charm.

(I am aware of the irony in making that statement, but mine is probably £10k away from being clean, so I stand by what I said).

i’m sorry to say that you are correct - and that i have seen that spoiler in person and the photos don’t do it justice - it’s flipping huge !

i was speaking to the owner last week who was busy telling me how much he loved the car and was glad it didn’t sell the last time it was up for sale !

but i don’t think i’ll be buying it back

I took Exo out for a hoon this afternoon and the screen was more than a bit wobbly, just being clamped into the phone holder. the plug popped out of the 12v socket a couple of times too so a permanent install was needed

IMG_2882.jpeg.775eb2a8a8c0e725eb0ecb589e465100.jpeg

the supplied bracket got chopped up and bolted to the underside of the wiring tray, the cable being fed through a grommit and hardwired into the loom

yes, CarPlay in a kit car is perhaps excessive but I like it :)

speakers next ?

turns out there’s an input for a reversing camera on there too

IMG_3166.jpeg.cc2ec62353e566ae9559ac818a6747ff.jpeg

which sounds a little daft but thinking about it, if you’ve got a helmet and a 4 point harness on, it might just be bloody handy :)

IMG_3207.jpeg.4cd817357eee1eb9114ca6ee367f38da.jpeg

great success !

i’ve been thinking about having a custom exhaust made for Exo but saw that some builders have used bike exhausts on their kits.

something like this ?

IMG_3239.png.1a957038e6d027d4bdef3d81310fbffa.png

got to be worth a go at that price

IMG_3225.jpeg.8317727ff67ad58fb6c23d37c036db66.jpeg

its tiny ! but massive too !

IMG_3226.jpeg.d8c380cdee95824bd4e4f639598ffcf5.jpeg

bet it’s loud ?

oh yes !

i took it for a very short test drive, sounds bloody brilliant :)

minor problem with that fancy dan reversing camera - it's wired to trigger when the reverse lights are on, but is a little too sensitive and is also triggered by the sidelights, headlights and the bloody indicators ! made for a fun test drive the other day :(

turned out to be a simple fix, it just needed a separate ground, rather than sharing the ground with the rest of the lights.

but a phot of a ground wire wouldn't be very interesting so here's a nice clean engine instead :)

so I got that noisy exhaust fitted properly

IMG_3263.jpeg.4b3e269a53dca01d8cec94f5c92a759f.jpeg

and went for a test drive hoon ! it sounds utterly awesome bouncing off the limiter :)

plenty of sideways action was had on the cold track tyres - even with a lowly 115 horses, its a bit of a handful !

time for a bit of mx5 fettling

when I bought the car, it came with a tidy hardtop

IMG_3571.jpeg.76857f91b1606d60fe9981ef21ebccc3.jpeg

which I sold and spent the money on another bini

IMG_3710.jpeg.ffaf30139ceecccf59dd698ff92c8d9e.jpeg

no problem, there is still a soft top

IMG_3727.jpeg.d2ac04da45b207957c141d076b8f18ea.jpeg

which I suspect is original to this 36 yr old mx5 !

IMG_3731.jpeg.cd7d9f3f70e4f195f610eab533b1ab98.jpeg

and leaks !

IMG_3791.jpeg.9c6d120ae376a4e52c5091b7d49388f5.jpeg

repairs have been attempted by the previous owner :(

IMG_3732.jpeg.5eb1f0b32d5d4709073d11804d4d7703.jpeg

I clagged on a bit more goo and hoped for the best

but it would appear I may have made a bit of a blunder selling that hardtop

(I could replace the soft top but finding a good used one is proving tricky and new ones are pricey - the mazda will be living in the garage until April when Exo returns so no rush)

somehow it leaks from the rear window too :(

no idea how as it all appears to be in good condition

the little mazda had one of these daft things fitted

IMG_1997.jpeg.ad0cfe4cdb3e4e71c38609e70cc53c8b.jpeg

which I took off and sold

to be replaced with this hefty bastard !

IMG_3696.jpeg.d1ac859a8e3b4913c7e33ef2ab568158.jpeg

many times it had to be lifted in and out of the car while I fannied about getting the fit just right

IMG_3797.jpeg.f8d510d18f8c45ae704be2fa1f88ba54.jpeg

but eventually it was in the right place

IMG_3805.jpeg.e59ab091baa4fdf5ab7bd6dbab42e25a.jpeg

that centre panel also got the snip

IMG_3836.jpeg.981b08e09f3dd5a87b0fc8a037104876.jpeg

as did the side trims

IMG_3834.jpeg.b6821c874a385a5202e0abe325d854af.jpegb

but eventually, after many hours

IMG_3839.jpeg.030d7ecff23dac45d927850f08114ff5.jpeg

@DVee8 conveniently popped in for a cuppa and was employed to help torquing the bolts

the seats went back in

IMG_3840.jpeg.0cb4819a5b072cba4ae6bbcb48c8f9aa.jpeg

and we're ready for some red hot track day action !

IMG_3841.jpeg.3ede3418de0c58aaea6c12524e59b0d6.jpeg

IMG_3844.jpeg.b8ebfa33c79c15848037eebaf0929ce1.jpeg

(the roof still leaks and there is the minor matter of a badly slipping clutch to be dealt with too !)

but soon, there will be hoon !

The weight of that rollbar!  But you have cut away all of that metalwork to balance things out.

Luckily, it was left out in the  pissing rain yesterday evening, or you may have never noticed that the roof still leaked.

no point in replacing 99% of the cooling system without doing this little sod (£6 for a stupid blanking cap) (this is the one that burst on @paulplom's trackday when I was driving his car :( )
