Apparently I'm sad - how sad are you?

After spending about 3.5 hours taking off the front wheels of the Volvo, cleaning the inners and outers with a toothbrush (BBS spokey alloys), then applying wax to both inner and outer wheel, and then dressing the tyres, and cleaning the plastic wheelarch liners, and putting a silcone polish on them, I'm "sad" according to SWMBO.Upon reflection, I reckon SAD is a bit strong, and she's just jealous that I can find some pleasure in something so simple (but very satisfying).Teh rimz now look lovely instead of covered in brake dust and shit, and next weekend, weather and time permitting, I'm gonna do the back ones.Anyone else as sad as me?

Outlaw, put your sadness into perspective by spending a while reading some of the posts at http://www.detailingworld.co.uk - you'll see that you are just at the tip of that particular iceberg...

I'd love to spend a day cleaning my car, got a proper buffer and everything, but just don't seem to have the time these days.

got a proper buffer

I need to buy a new buffer - any recommendations on one thats decent but not ridiculously expensive. I have bought something that I shall be collecting in December thats going to need some love from a buffer :D

I bought a Porter Cable 7424 a couple of years ago. It was a bit of a faff because it's not type-approved for the UK and hence needs to be ordered from the US (GR8 at the time when the dollar was 2-to-1, not so good now!) and used with a 110V transformer. All up it cost me about £150 with a set of pads and polishes. The results it gives are superb - I was able to "rescue" a DIY spray of a 405 wing to something that pretty much stood resemblance to the factory paint on the surrounding panels. You can get Makita gear now, as well as a UDM (Ultimate Detailing Machine) for a bit less. These are all proper dual action jobs with random orbital action and controllable speeds - somewhat different to the cheapy Halfords things that give you white finger and scorched paint. There's a "hardware" thread in that there Detailing World forum that should give some pointers.

Proper, total-war wheel fettling is immensely satisfying. And as we all know, a really clean car is much faster. :D

Nah, each to their own. Personally I see being obsessed with football and X-Factor and soaps as sad but apparently majority pursuits can't be classed as such.

I'm with Mash on this one. Anyone that watches any of the reality TV or Soaps is seriously sad. Unfortunately that means the majority of the UK.... Last year I took the Gottis off the Alpine. They were a bit corroded so I cleaned them, spent some time with a brush on a dremel and then waxed them on both sides. I'm not a big fan of cleaning cars (regularly rinse the dirt off but rarely use car shampoo) but when I do it, I do it properly.

+2I enjoy properly cleaning a car. Don't do it often mind but when I do theres a certain sense of satisfaction. The football obsessives whose world revolves around 'their' team, now THAT is sad.

Properly cleaned wheels really transform the look of a car. Why should it be considered 'sad' to look after one of your most expensive assets?I've got a rather erratic attitude to cleaning. I might spend half an hour wire brusing and polishing the thermostat housing, while leaving a load of bird muck to eat into the paint for another week.

-1, football is great.I took the front seats out of my car the other week so the carpet underneath was a clean as the rst of the car  To be fair though I scored a used Karcher valet machine thing a few months back and it's bleeding fantastic.

Thanks boys, I didn't think I'd be alone.....Don't get me wrong, the whole concours thing is sad and daft, but getting a shine out of a previously dull motor is satisfying.Certainly more than sitting in front of casualty or Corrie or whatever - which is her idea of fun....

Berating someone if their car isn't concours = BOLLOCKS.

See 'Watanabe's encounter with the Morris Minor OC' for more information.

I thought it was a "work in progress"

Smug, self-satisfied narrow minded wankers.

It is. And they are.

That is the best I can get it to look with the money I [mostly] have at the moment.

If you can imagine 'work in progress' spoken in a nasal, adenoidal voice as they shuffled off into the crowd in full OC regalia.....you'd be there.

But what I posted above was heard within earshot, they just didn't realise I have the hearing of a safecracker.

The lad on the NSJC stand (for which we apparently won an award) with the V8 Firenza whipped his line locker on and set the grass on fire when he left, which also went down well :D

I am SAD, but it's just the time of yearhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_a ... e_disorderI should be hibernating.

HA! I thought only American doctors diagnosed this disorder. I've been ready for sleep since about 1PM today. I think that's when the sun went down, too.On topic --- Love cleaning the car. Especially the bits that most people don't see so that when i drive it I know it's properly clean. Then again I'm driving a Honda Civic, so there's not joy to actually be had anywhere.
