Mitsubisi galant collection trip !!

We had a few goes at trying to sort it at the North East meet. It's a strange one.

Aye thanks fellas. I'm going to replace the coolant temp sensor and see if that alters anything. Find it odd it's an imperial thread on the sensor it's a 3/8" BSP thread.... The Japs love any thing imperial mind! ;)

Not much progress really on the galant. The idle was annoying me a little bit so I turned the airscrew down a little on the throttle body so it idles around 1100 rpm at the minute so a bit better. Checked the gear box oil as there was a splash of oil in the engine bay near the gear box but the box is perfectly full and as clear as honey. Have it a coolant flush too which was easy enough especially with the tap on the bottom of the radiator. I'm used to classic minis and most of them it involves taking the whole bottom hose of which is a pain in the mini engine bay. The coolant was definitely looking a little tired. Here's a sample .......

Oh yeah, it definitely didn't hurt changing it, especially if you plan to replace the coolant temp sensor anyway. I'd post a thread in the Galant (or any 90s Mitsubishi) FB group and see what they think, with a bit of luck the troubleshooting part has been done by someone else before.

Yea absolutley , I will see what they say! At the minute I'm thinking if the coolant temp sensor doesn't fix it, I'm going to take the little gears apart on the idle air control valve and soak the whole lot in carb cleaner. Doing A 120 mile round trip tomorrow for a fitness test, can't wait to take her for a good drive again!

Sounds like the sort of thing I need to get round to doing tm my Sigma, but hey, if it ain't totally broke, don't risk fixing it!!!

I had her out today for a 50 mile round trip on all sorts of roads and she was faultless.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring!

Happy days! Yea I guess things are only an issue if they bother you!! What engine do you have in there? Glad you had a good trip out. The Galant also drove lovely!

3 litre v6 non turbo, manual 5 speed, apparently autoboxes were made of chocolate but outsold manual ones, fingers crossed everything still works, most of the time, its getting a bit annoyingly unreliable, it's just blown its second bulb in 5 years!!! , some niggly little intermittent faults but meh.

I know of only one other still on the road in the UK but there is a following in Germany, no point learning German now we're gonna be at war with them again!

Would love to find one for spares and/or preferably a knowledgeable owner of one.

How's the Galant, old Mitsi's seem to be reliable enough

That looks awesome haha!! Great video! Do you still have the tape deck? The galant runs great, other than the idle being a little irratic at times it a very small flaw for such a solid car! What MPG is the sigma returning?

Not a great deal of progress on the Galant, I'm hoping to do some more preventative maintainance e.g cambelt when I get chance. I did however replace the number plates as the front had a chunk missing in the corner and it was cheap enough to buy a pair. At least now I wouldn't get a fine if some busy Bobbie clocked it :)

That's awesome! I was considering retro fitting one for nostalgia! And saves the abundence of discs getting scratched up haha

Plenty of boot space for thousands of cassettes!

What sort of shit do you listen to, I might be able to spare a few!

Ahhh thanks! That's awesome I was wondering what type of place it was in its day? It must've sold new cars, as the v5 history would dictate so! Was it solely a mitsubishi dealer do you know? I love the history and nostalgia trip

Yeah it was a Mitsubishi main dealer. On one of the main roads into Sunderland town center.

On the north side of the city across the Wearmouth bridge.

I could but I no longer live in Sunderland and hardly ever go back.

I could be wrong but i think they shut and moved to a out of town in the very late 90's early 2000's

I also happen to have hundreds of discs with house/trance on them, no cases though, belonged to a DJ mate who gave up. Available for a reasonable cost...

I’ll keep an eye out for you but tbh it’s unlikely I’ll see a Mitsubishi old enough to of been sold from there. That dealership was sold off in the early-mid noughties to an independent selling more high end used stuff.

Thanks fellas! So I've managed to put the new plates on and I inspected the cambelt today! The water pump looks new and there's no sign of damage to the belt . Hopefully it will be fine and I will wait until the weather's a little better

Good news on the cambelt then, if there are no visible cracks it should last for several more years.

Yea mate the idle pulley and water pump look brand new too! No signs of wear and no oxidisation around any of it!! I cleaned up the underside of the car too and rust proofed a few small patches of surface rust, keeping it pristine. Might have a go at repairing the giffer bump on the rear this weekend too weather and work permitting

Posted

Mitsubishi back then certainly seemed to treat the underside very well, with a zinc paint treatment, iirc, then underseal, on my Sigma anyway, the underseal is flaking in places but the paint underneath is still like new ????

Posted

Definitely!! I was contemplating under sealing it but the factory protection is that good that I feel that it may cause more hassle than its worth by trapping moisture etc...
