Old Chevy thumps new Chevy

:shock::shock::shock::shock: Waste of a lovely old fifties motor - I think we all now know that just because it's big doesn't necessarily make it safe ...

Die in style!

Indeed, even after seeing that, I know which I'd prefer to jump in to pop to the shops/ go to work/ have a cruise about.Old cars are cool, if that means I die quicker then meh

Can't see what the point was really, I mean would anybody be surprised that a new car is safer? No.Still rather drive old stuff though 8)

OMG! Old cars are dangerous!!! I'm gonna sell all mine and buy a Volvo.Not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3ygYUYia9I&feature=fvwJust as well. Better off in a modus accoring to the douchebags on fifth gear.I think we all realise that driving old cars is not as safe as new cars. Its the same as smoking, people know the risks but carry on anyway.Co-incidentally, both of them make you look cool 8)

It doesn't seem to have occurred to anybody that, no matter how weak your car is, you can avoid injury by simply driving around stuff.

Especially make sure you avoid cars in warehouses with crash test dummies in!

NCAP Top Tip: Don't drive your car straight into a concrete wall.

Very relevant test though. Just goes to show how things have moved on. 20 years ago those Volvos were the safest cars on the planet. Now a modern day renault 5 is a safer car. How things change.

Waste of a nice old Chevy to be honest, although there does seem to be a lot of rust particles flying about, which suggest it was perhaps not as good as it looks.

Although perhaps unbelievably..

The occupants of this DS are alive, but following the shock, they fell into a coma several days, transported in urgency by helicopter (visible on the 8th image), and l' hopitalized for multiple wounds.

Car safety has come a long way? How hard is it exactly to put crash absorbing sections in the front and stronger a/b/c frames/doors? Hardly worth crashing two cars for a silly advert is it?

Not entirely relevant, that offset crash is a really difficult one, your car has got to be designed to do it from the start. The old Volvo and that ancient Chevy weren't so they fail. Just like my car would fail climbing trees or doing trigonometry, not meant to do it so don't be surprised when it can't.If 5th Gear weren't pandering to the braindead masses, it might have been interesting to do a 1980s Volvo spec test on a modern NCAP car and see which one passes  As for the Chevy crashtest, with no seatbelts back then you didn't have a lot of hope anyway. If it helps owners of new cars feel smug for spending £300 a month, I'm happy for them 8)

Coming up next: a comparison of the special effects between a 1959 and 2009 film. Which is better?

Ah but that was just another marketing ploy - just like nothing was as reliable as a Volkswagen etc. ;)
