R50 Bini OBD2 port woes

2001 R50 Bini.

Daughter has asked me if I can turn the airbag light off.  Yes but no.  There's no.power at the OBD2 port.  I've tried all three readers and they work on the omega, but nothing happens on the Bini.

I've checked fuses and all correct in passenger foot well and next to battery.

Not sure if there are any others?

Yeah but no. Tried that.

Take a good look into the port and see if any of the terminals have been pushed back out the plug

Not sure about binis but that vintage Bmw’s often had another diagnostic port under the bonnet for everything else apart from engine

do you have an aftermarket radio fitted ? I had this problem with the a2, one of the data lines used for obd was also connected to the stereo, I unplugged the crappy stereo and the obd port came to life.

Stereo radio cassette and 6 disk changer are original.

I have removed a fuse in the bottom picture.  Having checked every fuse this one is blown and blew again when replaced. F5 5A on the left.

Not entirely sure what it's protecting tyo be fair.  I tried it with a larger fuse temporarily to see if it had anything to do with it, but the reader was still not powering up.

love the dodgy diode installation .......  top right ...

is that original ?

Ha just noticed that . Looks a right lash up so on a Bini that’s prob factory fit .

They use the same diode as links in the timing chain for the later Prince engine ones

That was disconnected. Not sure why. I reconnected it.

There are also fuses under the bonnet.

Try Fuse 1 because that's for the ECM I do believe. Could be labeled F01 or F1 or any number of things on a Bini R50.

I would hazard a guess that a blown ECM fuse would cause issues like no Comms to obd.  ECM fuse is 5a iirc

Bloody Bini by name, Bini by nature

looks like OBD uses a 2 wire signalling system to the ecu , which can use different protocols ..

but it looks like the power can come from the car not the ecu

might be worth pulling the obd socket to see what's behind it

I would also be tempted to get a multimeter and check every single bloody fuse. Both under bonnet and in car just to cover that base

May shed a bit more light hopefully?

*Remember these are LHD cars so they sit the wrong side*
