Was the extra connection on the old alternator for a surpression cap?

Posted

What about connection for a rev counter on higher spec'ed motors?

Posted

It has a rev counter, and it seems to work without the wire.

Excellent save! Wonderful progress. That ain't rust. Just acne, automotive acne.

This is rust....

Great work, Doc. Did you manage to get the plugs and/or a wheel bearing?

Spoiler

Plugs en route, wheel bearing I will assess once I actually get the car moving - not sure which one needs doing.

Anything else (cheapish) you need?

Getting a bit of a list together..

Dizzy cap

Rotor arm

Vacuum hose, and lots of it, but need to check the diameter.

Fuel hose.

Alternator and Power steering belts.

Rocker cover gasket

Satin black paint for window surrounds etc

And then the more expensive stuff.

Two tyres (Will do part worns to start with)

Battery? Depending on how knackered this is.

Does this have PAS? My 1.3 that I had years ago was a great drive but the steering was heavy.

Just to confirm - yes it does.

'Fully loaded' 'top of the range' etc.

What size are the tyres? I’ve got plenty of decent 14” ones in various sizes if someone could shitely them down, although by the time you’ve paid to get them fitted, it may just be cheaper to buy some locally?

Piddly 13s on this I'm afraid.

Have you got nothing on rims? This will be 4 x 100 I think...

Afraid not...I scrapped all my old rims a few weeks ago in a clearing up frenzy

If I swap the Rover 45 wheels over to the alloys, a set of steelies will be spare.  Right PDF but a bit biggerer perhaps?

That would work, I think the rolling radius won't be much different.

Great thread!

Could the extra connection on the alternator be there to drive the battery warning light on the dash, the one that gives you a warning when the alternator isn't charging?

Posted

I think it's fine.

I started it up again today, bearing in mind I haven't driven anywhere, and only ran it for 10 minutes yesterday, and it started without much difficulty.

I'd call that a success. Just the running issues to sort now.

HT leads on. No change.

Will keep trying...

have the new ones arrived yet ?

Yeah, arrived this morning.

Haven't had a chance to check how they work, as flattened the battery again. Need to get it out for a run to charge it, but can't as it won't stay running....

Catch 22 situation

Did you figure the new alterpotato out then?

Yeah, alternator fitted and the 'extra' wire doesn't appear to affect anything...

With the Rover gone, I moved the Mazda into the vacant spot, and it was the first time it had moved under its own steam since it was dropped off.

Still feels like it's running on 3, so hopefully the rotor arm / dizzi cap will cure it. Or maybe not. Maybe ignition module? It's not old enough for points, thank goodness.

Just to add insult to injury, I damaged one of the heater matrix pipes getting the alternator out, so now I have a leak to sort. Hmmph.
