PT Cruisers.......

I seem to have developed an unhealthy interest in the verminous little buggers..........are they as shite as popular myth would have us believe ?

Posted

NO.

They're actually really nice to drive, especially over distance; I did a couple of long trips in mine.  Round town they can be a bit of a pain.  Quite a lot of the car is invisible to the driver, so parking isn't easy, and anyway the steering lock is rubbish.  It's no Triumph Herald, that's for sure!

I found it comfy, but that's always going to be subjective, depending on size, build, back injuries etc etc.  They're hard on front suspension bushes too.  If only Chrysler had gone RWD....

I'd have another one tonight (but not a diesel, ever).

I think these are one of the best looking cars of this century. Not a Boxster rival, more a modern MGC GT. Cheaper by the day at the moment and in ten years will all be gone. About half of them are automatics, which can be readily swapped up to merc V8 according to the internet. (If acceleration is your thing)

£800, no clutch, Caerdydd https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chrysler-Crossfire-2004-SPARES-OR-REPAIR-MOT-TIL-OCT-19-CLUTCH-GONE-NO-RESERVE/254113199268?hash=item3b2a53b4a4:g:K6YAAOSwm~1cRKYX

The Crossfire has a certain appeal to me, I always think its one of the few cars that wouldn't look out of place in Gotham City, Chrysler certainly put some Art Deco influences into the final production design that were almost entirely lost on their other cars.

The PT Cruiser probably isn't too bad. I think most of the hate its receiving for pretending (including most of their owners) to be something that it clearly isnt. Parts should be cheap, so will be the interior.

Also wtf is going on with this dude:

In my one year of ownership of a pre facelift (pre 2006) dizzla PT I was actually quite impressed. Ride quality really is rather good but as eddy notes above, these are great long distance cars, terrible around town. Visibility is pretty poor. Front suspension a noted weak spot, engine bays cramped and uncooperative.

Interior isn't cheap as you might think, funnily enough (unusual for a US car) - it's actually well nailed together and the seats are comfy enough too. Go for the Limited spec with all the toys and heated seats/cruise control etc

General consensus seems to be things improved after the 2006 facelift - scalloped headlights means facelift -  more powah but make sure the clutch is solid (sorry Neil), the petrol autoboxes seem to be less liked as they're total gas guzzlers apparently, and allegedly couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Fun cars if truth be told. I really loved the shape and styling of my matt black machine - just a shame they never did a RWD V8 version which would have been epic.

A garden full of Crossfire convertibles is only useful as spares for a garage full of Crossfire coupes.

I think the Petrol / Auto ** PT Cruiser is unppopular because auto shoves them into the top tax bracket.

Hence bargains.

** The only variant to consider, surely?

Are crossfires not about the same price as slightly older SLKs now, which I thought was the same car under the skin? Gives buyers a bit of choice.

To me they say more middle aged and fat than rich old housewife like the SLK.

That said, despite being middle aged and fat, they dont appeal to me.
