That's the wrong sized disclock for the wheel, with the correct one there's no way to get anything to lever with into it.

What a bugger though, I think they would be vulnerable to an angle grinder attack to the hinge point but that's about all I can think of

Doesn't the insurance cover the charges?

Glad it's been found, though. Looks like a straight example.

Depends if you want to go that route. I have just paid where charges are incurred and either fixed or scrapped to keep my NCB and record clean.

There could well be a £500 excess for theft claims..

Best to be on your guard if offered parts in really good condition where there’s no logical suggestion as to why they’d be on a breaker in the case of classic cars. Any old Golf Mk2 that are at the point of being suitable only for parts are likely to be bollocksed and wouldn’t have rust free panels and tidy interiors.

Ok update 3: Looks like he might be getting a bit shafted by storage fees, called the recovery company and they said the police still want to do forensics on the car, I don't know if this is standard procedure or if they think they might find something useful on his car in particular. He was intending on going to have a look at it today but the recovery company said don't bother because the police still want to have a look. Hopefully the insurance will cover the recovery and storage fees, he only has a £150 excess for theft on his insurance, he still needs to decide weather making a claim is worth losing his no claims bonus (only 1 year).

I didn't really address this at the time but although this is a shit situation it was nice to see how many people showed support and I would like to thank everyone who did, over 200 people shared the post on facebook as well as the people on here, and two people have come forward and offered parts to fix it when he gets it back.

Pretty sure it will be well worth claiming in this case. Storage fees are potentially hundreds of pounds, losing a year's no claims is only going to make a difference of maybe £50 at renewal.

Potential for the storage fees to make it an automatic write off, it used to be common in the 80s for the insurer just to tell the recovery agent to keep the vehicle in lieu of fees when these would exceed a reasonable portion of the pay out value.

ALSO

See what I said earlier about forensics, you DO NOT pay for this period, as far as you are concerned you would have collected the car from the compound straight away, it is being held at police request - they are the ones the extra storage fees should be paid by in this instance.

I’m greatly surprised that the Police are taking a serious interest in catching the car theives. I thought their focus these days was dealing with quibbles on Facebook.

Had several Mk2s and really like them (inc diesel one as transport for explosives in German Salt mine) beware they are easy to steal with small screwdriver pushed through door handle rubber surround to open locked door and no immobiliser, Bros lost his 2 weeks from new.   You can have the below for free if you know how to fit?

You won't get charged storage till its cleared by the police but ring daily as when cleared they may forget to ring you! Insurers will more than likely see it as a total loss just by the time you add everything up and see what's available. Taking into account liability for state of engine etc. Good luck and wish I could have helped with parts.

He finally got it back today. The hold up last week was because although the police had finished having a look they had not told the recovery people they had released it therefore they couldn't let him take it. As it turns out he couldn't have got it anyway because although he has green flag breakdown cover they refused to move it since it was stolen not broken down which seems bit shitty on their part tbh. Anyway it got recovered by a family friend in the end and has ended up back at his parents house with some new windows that someone in a VW group very kindly offered for free, he paid in a crate of beer instead. The bastards that took the car also nicked the stock radio and the heater controls for some reason and buggered up the trim under the ignition column but other than that and the drivers window the car is fine thankfully.

He hasn't made a claim on the insurance, the fees from the recovery place were £200 in total including the recovery and storage over the weekend after the police released it on friday.

Apparently there is a clause in his insurance docs that says if they write it off they won't let him buy it back off them so it wasn't worth the risk of losing the car even if the fees ended up being more expensive.

With any luck it'll be back on the road in a week or so.

It's great that he got it back and got it sorted.  Annoying it cost him £200 to get it back, but at least folks were willing and able to help him out when he needed it.
