 Black and silver plates are technically legal under the rolling VED exemption but look cack. 

 

 

Yes, the dolt who made the regulations had no idea about historicity.  Soon cars from the late 70s will be able legally to have black plates, and this will look daft.   Even when black plates were still around in the early 70s, a lot of cars when new would have had the white and yellow plates, as they would have been seen at the time as more happening YO if you had a hyper modern 1972 motah.
