OMG55 S-Class - It just needs a hand brake cable and some back tyres for it's mot apparently.  Could be cheap if you've got the stone for it.

When the F40 was launched, I remember thinking 400 BHP in a road car was amazing, these days it seems a few hundred quid will buy near as damn it 400 BHP ( before Junkman points out that the 1956 Imperial Wallowking 7 had 400 BHP for $500 - I mean real BHP , not measured at the spark plug)

I know what you mean when the e39 m5 came out the fact it had 400bhp blew my mind. I've no idea what the latest one is but I bet it's over 600.

Not autoshite but those Audi s6's with the Lamborghini v10 are available for less than 10k. Good job I don't have any money .

This makes me want to cry.  It used to look like this, complete with original wheel trims (and an engine)

Makes me sad too, when I took that photo it lived near me and was a proper honest old thing. The new owner ripped the engine out and it's been doing the rounds of the bay ever since. Annoying that he decided he had no time to do the transplant AFTER finding time to pull the old engine out.

One American engine of yore that potentially develops 400 PS (DIN) is the ultra limited production 1963 - 1966 Chrysler 426 Race Hemi, built by Chrysler's marine department and only sold to selected clients (i.e. race teams) without the factory's usual 5/50 warranty.

The only other historic American engines that develop in the neighbourhood of 400 real horsepower are the Ford 427 DOHC and the Chevrolet 427 L88, L89 and ZL1 engines.

Of neither of these engines more than 100 units were ever produced and they must be considered 'homologation' engines to make them eligible for use in Stock Car and Super Stock racing.

The 1956 Imperials had a 354 CID Hemi rated at 280 hp (SAE gross). Going by the acceleration and top speed figures, 180 PS (DIN) is realistic, it also harmonises with the German TÜV rating at the time. Mind you, this still made them the fastest American production saloons of their day.

Wisely spent, $500 would add about 20 real horsepower to a 354 Hemi.
